Summary: 

The Director of Data Science and Analytics supports the Office of the President and the office of the Vice President and Chief Financial and Operating Officer (CFOO) in capturing, analyzing, and interpreting data for institute decision-making. The Director will collaborate cross departmentally to help gain efficiencies and drive decision-making through data and analytics. They will serve as the analytics specialist and advance the institute’s ability to turn information into insight. In support of the institute’s strategic initiatives, they will work proactively with colleagues throughout the Institute to determine information needs, develop clear research objectives and questions, collect and refine data, produce descriptive and inferential analyses, synthesize and present findings, and develop data solutions to ensure that stakeholders have the information they need. The position will also participate in broader responsibilities including data governance, ad-hoc reporting, external reporting requirements, and documentation of work product. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the CFOO, designs and leads data strategy for the Institute.

  • Leads development of key performance indicators (KPI) to measure, support and implement organizational strategic priorities.

  • Establishes, administers, and coordinates research activities including collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and reporting information for use in decision making.

  • Implements processes for collecting, linking, and analyzing data from a variety of sources.

  • Oversees data compilation, report development and archiving activities in support of the operation goals.

  • Provides technical, research and statistical consultation and support to Operations and Strategic Initiatives teams.

  • Develops presentations of analytic findings highlighting meaningful information for operational management

  • Works closely with appropriate teams in research and statistical analysis that may be needed for various projects.

  • Serves as liaison and provides necessary support for organizational effectiveness, planning, evaluation, and program assessment activities.

  • Develops, administers, analyzes, and reports on surveys that measure engagement, performance, and satisfaction for employees; manages and maintains the web survey software.

  • Provides support and training in continuous quality improvement methods and the use/analysis of data related to effective practice of continuous quality improvement. 

Scope:

  • This is an individual contributor role and has no supervisory or budget responsibilities. 

Education:

  • PhD in Sociology or related field  

Experience:

  • Five years of related experience preferably in a higher education environment.

  • Data visualization software experience, Tableau preferred.

  • Workday experience preferred.

  • Experience in writing analytical and technical reports. 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work with others to accurately identify data and informational needs.

  • Strong communication skills; openness to different viewpoints; respect towards others; collaborates well on joint projects and decisions; gives and receives candid and helpful feedback.

  • Ability to work with a wide variety of collaborators with various levels of expertise; ability to make suggestions regarding best research methods; ability to handle multiple projects and demands at once.

  • Ability to design survey instruments.

  • Knowledge of appropriate statistical methods; ability to present statistical findings in clear, concise, understandable format.

  • In-depth knowledge of statistical and data visualization tools (PowerBI, Tableau, SPSS, MPlus, Atlas.ti, Microsoft Excel).

  • Ability to produce effective Tableau and PowerPoint presentations.

  • Ability to deal responsibly with confidential information and a commitment to accuracy and reporting integrity. 

Physical Requirements: 

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
