Job Description:

APPOINTMENT: July 1, 2021

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Director of the School of Engineering is the academic and administrative officer of the unit and has the responsibility for ensuring and promoting educational excellence, professional growth, and service to society among and between faculty, students, staff, alumni, and the general public. The Director is responsible for furnishing leadership for evaluation and improvement of instruction; implementing the strategic plan of the school including budgetary control, faculty recruitment, appointments, promotion, instruction, and research; supervising, coordinating, and submitting accreditation self-studies and reports: coordinating curriculum related matters including course scheduling and faculty assignments; coordinating Quad Cities Manufacturing Lab activities, grants, and contracts; cultivating a supportive environment that results in significant alliances with industry, government, and other relevant constituencies; engage in responsible stewardship to ensure positive, mission based outcomes.

This position reports to the Dean of the College of Business and Technology, who reports to the Provost. Faculty and office support staff associated with the academic unit report to the director.

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: An earned doctorate in one of the disciplines represented within the school from an institution with an ABET-EAC accreditation is required. The position requires significant familiarity with the academic administrative environment and a demonstrated record of effective teaching, research/scholarship, and service-related activities. The position also requires significant experience related to curriculum development, accreditation, academic administration, community relations, faculty evaluation, donor relations, and stewardship. Fiscal management, interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and leadership skills are required. Finally, the position requires excellent written, oral, and technology application skills. U.S. citizenship or the ability to obtain a security clearance is required. Successful candidates must be eligible for tenure at the full professor rank upon hiring.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated experience with applied research in support of technology and engineering innovation is preferred, especially excellent relations with manufacturing companies, engineering firms, and innovation organizations. Successful candidates should also posses a demonstrated record of grant preparation, submission, and administration. An excellent record of managing relationships between students, faculty, and external constituencies to promote a positive educational experience and a supportive learning environment is preferred.

Also preferred is the ability to effectively recruit, retain, and interact with students (potential and current), student family members (in recruiting situations), faculty, administration, alumni, potential employers/external industry partners, potential donors, university support staff, university advisors, and external advisory board members.

For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body). Unless otherwise stated, the degree must be "in hand" at the time of application.

THE SCHOOL: Established in 2009, the School of Engineering is located on the Quad Cities campus of Western Illinois University and currently offers degrees in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, and general engineering. Through the Quad Cities Manufacturing Lab, the School of Engineering supports advances in American manufacturing by helping manufacturers to develop cutting-edge technologies and processes to remain competitive and at the forefront of innovation in their industries. At the same time, QCML's internship opportunities ensures a pipeline of skilled talent able to fulfill the demands of leading-edge manufacturing technologies, further empowering America's manufacturers. Working closely with industry partners, business development entities, and the Quad Cities Innovation Center the School of Engineering provides students with hands-on design experiences in support of regional organizations. Senior design projects typically involve real projects where students work with or within companies.

THE UNIVERSITY: Since 1902, Western Illinois University has provided outstanding educational opportunities to individuals in west central Illinois and well beyond our region and state. WIU's traditional residential campus in Macomb, Illinois, is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region, while the WIU-Quad Cities non-residential branch campus in Moline, Illinois, is the only public university in the immediate Quad Cities region.

Western is a comprehensive university offering 62 undergraduate and 41 graduate degree programs, which includes an Ed.D. in educational leadership and a Ph.D. in environmental science. Macomb is an Amtrak city with twice-daily service to Chicago.

WIU-Quad Cities: The only public university in the Quad Cities area, WIU-QC offers select undergraduate and graduate programs, including a doctorate in education and a doctorate in environmental studies, at its non-residential campus in Moline, IL (population 44,000).

WIU's Macomb campus is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region. Annually, 12 major theatrical and dance productions and studio shows are performed, along with outstanding concerts, lectures, presentations, films, dance performances and more. The Gwendolyn Brooks and Casa Latina cultural centers offer programs and activities focusing on Black and Hispanic cultures, while the Women's Center promotes gender equity through education, support and advocacy. WIU's student organization for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and ally (LGBTQ*A) community provides resources, support and programming. These cultural and resource centers promote WIU's goal of enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through educational programming and advocacy.

The University's athletics program, based on the Macomb campus, sponsors 17 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's and women's varsity sports. Football competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision through the Missouri Valley Football Conference; all other varsity sports compete at the Division I level through The Summit League.
