Summary

The Director of Finance (Risk and Compliance) will assist the Vice President, Chief Financial and Operating Officer with the review and analysis of the financial position of the Institute and implementing sound financial practices. Primary duties will include the development, analysis, and interpretation of accounting and budget information to inform key decisions; risk and compliance reporting of financials to include Tax, Treasury, Budget, and Procurement; and serve as a liaison with the Institute’s external auditors in the audit process. The position also provides an interface between all areas of the internal organization including Business Solutions, People and Culture, Communication, Science, Science Education, Investments, and the Janelia Operations and Administration with regard to sound operating and fiscal practices to actively manage risk.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Risk and Compliance. Provide risk and compliance oversight for various financial functions such as Treasury, Tax, Budget, and Procurement. Assist in establishing major economic objectives and policies for the organization; prepare and present reports that clearly communicate the Institute’s financial position in the areas of risk and compliance based on past, present, and future operations. Lead monthly departmental and organizing project budget and compliance reviews, comparing actual expenditures and income to the approved budgets, and ensuring regulatory compliance with the Department of Labor, Internal Revenue Service, and other state and local regulations. Work with the Vice President Chief Financial and Operating Officer to develop and carry out long-term financial goals for the organization. 

Audit Management. Serve as liaison with the Institute’s external audit team and review financial statements and regulatory filings for accuracy and alignment with organizational objectives. Serve as the main point of contact and manage the relationship with our internal audit function as performed by KPMG. Ensure that audit results are shared across the organization as appropriate and serve as the point person for collecting responses to findings. 

Relationship Management.  Partner with key stakeholders in HHMI Financial Operations and contribute to the success of other HHMI programs and Institute-wide initiatives.  Provide constructive feedback to HHMI Operations in the spirit of continuous improvement towards HHMI’s future state aspirations.  Coordinate and work collaboratively with HHMI leadership across all functions serving as an expert resource in the areas of operations and finance. 

In addition to the duties specifically identified by this job description, the position will include other duties if and as assigned by the direct supervisor or others with supervisory authority over this position. 

Scope:

  • This is an individual contributor position with responsibility for managing the audit budgets. 

Education:

  • A bachelor's degree in finance, business, or related field. Master’s preferred.

  • Certified Public Accountant 

Experience

  • Minimum of ten years of related experience ideally gained through increasingly responsible management positions within the finance industry.

  • Systems administration and project management experience preferred. 

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong technical and analytical skills with the ability to build financial models and forecasts.

  • Working knowledge of manual and automated accounting systems with an ability to structure and analyze complex financial reports.

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience in customer service, negotiation, and conflict resolution in an environment where legitimate demands often compete.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving acumen and highly-responsive customer service mentality.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate at all levels of the organization as well as with external constituencies and vendors. 

Physical Requirements:
 

While performing the duties of this position, the employee will work in an office setting and will travel to attend meetings and conferences and make presentations. The employee must be able to operate computers and related office equipment. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). The ability to communicate and exchange information with others is required.
