Position Summary:

The Lead Project Manager reports to the Project Portfolio Management Office (PPMO) and will be accountable for leading the project management of a large transformation program through the full project lifecycle for a highly-visible and complex program within Finance & Administration. This position will be embedded within the program and have dotted line reporting responsibilities to the Program Director.

Operating within the PPMO's framework, this position is responsible for ensuring a group of related projects are managed in a coordinated manner. Facilitates scope discussion to align on priorities, activities, and outcomes for the overarching program and during each phase of work. Facilitates iterative planning efforts, including milestone definition, phase-gate approaches, and seamless transitions between phases. Monitors program-wide schedule with input from multiple workstream project managers. Responsible for visibility across workstreams, at the program level, to ensure understanding of dependencies, utilization of resources, and alignment of risks, issues, decisions, and change control. Additionally, help orchestrate delivery management across the program to create and manage standard project workstream approaches.

Must be familiar with project and program management best practices, terminologies, and standard guidelines, plus have familiarity with a combination of project management methodologies, such as, waterfall, agile, hybrid, critical path, etc.

Responsible for and works closely with assigned project managers and the program leadership team to assist in assembling project teams, identifying key stakeholders, producing project and program artifacts, capturing and managing project and program risks, action items, issues, and key decisions throughout the project and program lifecycle, providing status reports, and assisting in development of the strategy and roadmap for full program implementation.

Additionally, provides input towards prioritizing work within the program and develops and manages cross-functional roadmaps and interdependencies of the projects within the program to ensure that overall program-level goals are achieved. The Lead Project Manager works closely with project governance teams to remove barriers and coordinate efforts across multiple functional areas.

This position will lead and provide support to drive results, implement changes, and track the impacts of various initiatives. A key component of success in this role is to promote initiative transparency, facilitate data-driven decision making, and ensure the program leadership team has the information necessary to effectively lead the program.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Minimum 10 years of formal project management (PM) experience and a strong track record in large-scale implementations within complex environments.

Required skills -
1. PM experience implementing large-scale, transformational projects within a complex environment, preferably in a higher education environment, highly preferable in a public, R1-university or university system.
2. PM expertise demonstrating the knowledge of formal PM tools, processes and techniques, including the ability to apply a structured PM framework that meets the project requirements and supports effective behaviors and interactions to successfully implement multiple, related projects.
3. Experience leading cross-functional teams and building effective relationships with a variety of stakeholders across all levels of the organizational structure.
4. Strong analytical skills, both quantitative and qualitative.
5. Demonstrated planning and organizational skills with ability to handle several major projects simultaneously.
6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including communicating sensitive information effectively, strong conflict management skills, and ability to lead effective decision making.
7. Demonstrated presence with senior leaders and ability to act as a partner and trusted advisor.
8. Credible, articulate, and authoritative with a proven ability to effectively influence at all levels of an organization without authority.
9. Demonstrated experience managing multiple vendors to ensure all teams are moving forward collaboratively towards project success.
10. Demonstrated leadership and mentorship of other project managers.

License or Certificate:

Project Management Professional (PMP) certification required. If candidate does not have current PMP, must agree to obtain PMP within 6 months of hire.

Additional Information:

Strongly Preferred Qualifications:
1. Experience implementing an enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, especially cloud technologies.
2. Experience with Oracle Cloud or Workday.
3. Demonstrated success implementing projects successfully at an R1-university or within a university system.
4. Experience with formalized stage & gate process.
5. Experience directly supervising or indirectly leading the work of other project managers either in a matrixed or projectized environment.
