Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) is encouraging applications for a full-time Associate Scientist to work at the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Our team at SWPC has developed the coupled Whole Atmosphere Model and Ionosphere Plasmasphere Electrodynamics (WAM-IPE) model to study the connection between the terrestrial and space weather. The successful candidate will work with the team at SWPC to manage the WAM-IPE code, contribute to develop and improve the model, and maintain the code on different computer platforms.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Code management and development for the WAM-IPE model.
  • Perform comprehensive model testing, evaluation, and technical validation.
  • Port and maintain the model’s source code on multiple high-performance computing platforms.
  • Analyze and optimize WAM-IPE performance.
  • Develop a user-friendly scientific visualization package.
  • Contribute to scientific model validation and support research activities within the team.

What You Should Know
  • The initial term of this position is 1 year, with the possibility of extension subject to performance and availability of funding.
  • Due to the level of security clearance needed for this role, we will only be able to consider U.S citizens and permanent residents (green cardholders).
  • This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305. If you are the selected finalist you will be required to pass a federal laboratory background clearance for site access.

    • Associate Scientist I: 55K-70K
    • Associate Scientist II: 65K-80K

What We Require
  • U.S citizenship or permanent residence (green card) is required for this position.
  • A B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in Physics, Space Physics, Meteorology, Computer Sciences or related field is required.
  • Relevant experience in the field is required.

What You Will Need
  • Proficiency in parallel code development using Fortran and MPI.
  • Familiarity with parallel code debugging.
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing environments.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and to take initiative.
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal).

What We Would Like You To Have
  • Proficiency in Python, shell scripting, and version control software and platforms (e.g., Git, Bitbucket, GitHub).
  • Familiarity with performance analysis and benchmarking.
  • Familiarity with computational physics, including common numerical schemes and algorithms.
  • Experience working with a variety of operating systems and environments, including Windows and Linux.
