POSITION DETAILS
CUNY School of Law is the premier public interest law
school in the country. Founded in 1983, we train lawyers to serve
historically underrepresented communities and work towards greater
diversity in the legal profession. Our motto, “law in the service

law school on the East Coast, and one of the top law schools in the
country for clinical practice. Supervised by the Director of
Student Affairs, the Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor or
Social Worker (LCSW) will work with a multi-interdisciplinary
Student Affairs team to address the health and wellbeing of the law
school's student community. In addition, the Mental Health
Counselor will offer counseling services to support and encourage
students transition and adjustment to law school from prelaw and/or
pipeline programming to orientation, graduation, and studying for
and taking the bar exam. Services may vary from one-on-one
short-term counseling, referral services, crisis intervention to
group meetings and group facilitation. Evening and weekend hours
will be required. This is a 1 year appointment, comprised of two 6
month appointments.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Counseling
- Offering psychological counseling to students
across a broad range of presenting issues.
- Performing crisis intervention for emergency
psychological care and offer counseling services during walk in
and/or telehealth hours.
- Planning, developing, and facilitating group
counseling and support groups as needed. Consultation - Providing
consultative services to the law schools instructional and
administrative staff about students with personal, social,
academic, and professional difficulties.
- Providing consultative services to the Title IX
Coordinator and Deputy Title IX Coordinator. Outreach, Education,
and Programming
- Planning, developing, coordinating, and conducting
a variety of workshops on topics relevant to students' needs.
- Developing and implementing educational and
prevention outreach programming, especially for undeserved or
special populations, and which demonstrates cultural
responsiveness. - Developing and implementing workshops and
professional development for students, faculty and staff on
critical wellness topics, including but not limited to, Mental
Health 101, stress and time management, suicide, violence
prevention/verbal de-escalation, healthy relationships, addiction,
and veterans' issues.
- Planning, collaborating, and developing workshops
and resources for peer groups, and support groups.
- Planning and developing outreach initiatives and
workshops for students and their support network (i.e., relatives,
friends, and allies), including the preparation of materials.
Additional
- Performing other duties as assigned by the Director
of Student Affairs as well as the Associate Dean for Student
Affairs and developing health and wellness programs and
co-curricular educational activities in conjunction with community
partners.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Doctoral degree in Psychology to include Ph.D. and
Psy.D. programs OR a Master's degree in an appropriate discipline
for personal or psychological counseling and a New York State
license as a mental health practitioner (social work, psychology,
or mental health counseling). In addition, six years' professional
experience is required for all candidates.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). - Advanced
diagnostic and therapeutic skills, particularly using short-term
treatment interventions and crisis intervention, and proven
experience with interdisciplinary care. - Experience working in
higher education and with administration, faculty, and staff.
- Experience with a law school community or law
school setting, or comparable graduate level student population, or
proven understanding of the issues facing law students and the law
school community.
- Considerable experience in the psychological
counseling of law school students strongly preferred.
- Considerable experience working with diverse
populations and demonstrated cultural competence.
- Understanding of critical race theory,
racial-identity development models, and intersectionality.
- Demonstrated experience in outreach education and
educational programming.
- Be self-motivated and have outstanding
organizational and communication skills (including verbal, written
and interpersonal).
- Understand issues pertinent to the practice and
enhancement of mediation using standard counseling techniques.
- Bilingual preferred.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Provides student counseling services as a member of a

staff regarding student mental health issues; may
