Taylor University is seeking applications and nominations of distinctive candidates for an Art Education/Art Therapy faculty appointment in the Art, Film & Media Department.  This is a tenure track position beginning in August 2021.  Rank and salary are dependent upon qualifications and experience.

A doctoral level degree in art therapy or art education is required. Additional qualifications include: prior teaching experience; professional experience as an art therapist/art educator; and demonstrated scholarly and professional activity. A successful candidate must be a dynamic classroom teacher passionate about the essential nature of the arts and human creativity who will effectively model the best of pedagogical methods and student/teacher relationships. Candidates must also be strongly committed to the university mission of developing servant leaders marked with a passion to minister Christ’s love and truth to a world in need. Candidates must be strongly committed to the educational mission and evangelical Christian orientation of the University.

 

JOB SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to teach Art Education and Introductory Art Therapy courses.
  • Prior college-level teaching experience desirable.
  • Professional working experience in the field of art therapy and/or art education required.
  • Capacity to mentor students in their development and calling as art teachers and therapists.
  • Ability to teach additional coursework in a specific 2D or 3D media a plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES                 

  • Teach one Introduction to Art Therapy and one Introduction to Art Education course per year.
  • Teach one Elementary and one Secondary Art Methods course alternating years.
  • Teach up to four Art for Teachers courses per year in support of the Education Department.
  • Supervise Art Education and Pre-Art Therapy students in student teaching and internship placements.
  • Maintain professional credentials and stay up-to-date with related requirements and developments in the field.
  • Advise students in the fields of Art Education and Pre-Art Therapy.
  • Teach coursework in a studio area as needed to maintain full teaching load.
  • Participate in meetings and serve on committees in the Department and University. This may include program development, community outreach, student mentoring, and participating in accreditation-related activities.

 

DEPARTMENT      

The Art Program within the Department of Art, Film & Media at Taylor University, is a dynamic program, continually striving to produce professional caliber artists, designers, photographers, teachers and therapists, equipped to impact the 21st century marketplace. The department resides in the 38,000 square foot Modelle Metcalf Visual Arts Center offering 7 programs of study: Art Education, Pre-Art Therapy, 2D Studio, 3D Studio, Photography, Graphic Design and Illustration. The department currently offers a BA and BS degree. Annually, the department enrolls approximately 80-100 majors, with approximately two dozen majors in the Pre-Art Therapy and Art Education programs. Besides courses in the Education Department, Studio Art and Art History areas, the Art Education curriculum is comprised of 3 specific courses: Introduction to Art Education, Elementary Art Education, and Secondary Art Methods. The Pre-Art Therapy program consists of a selection of Studio Art, Art History and Psychology courses necessary for future graduate study and a career in Art Therapy. The Department wishes to begin offering an annual Introduction to Art Therapy course. Department faculty are practicing artists, sculptors, designers, illustrators, historians and engaged in significant research.
