Director of General Accounting and Financial Reporting

The Director of General Accounting and Financial Reporting is responsible for using the appropriate accounting methods and techniques to ensure the accurate and timely recording of cash receipts, cash disbursements and day-to-day accounting transactions. Additionally, this position manages and supervises the staff and functional operations of General Accounting and prepares or coordinates the preparation of most internal and external reports, including, but not limited to annual financial statements, quarterly financial information for the Board of Trustees, special requests from the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR), the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC), and public information requests.

Characteristic Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Ensures timely and accurate accounting cash control operations, including monthly reconciliation of all cash transactions to the bank statements.
2. Coordinates year-end closing process and prepares annual financial statements for the University and the Foundation in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
3. Reconciles or oversees the reconciliation of all general ledger accounts.
4. Conducts various complex accounting and reconciliation processes involving cash, investments and other areas as needed.
5. Coordinates and supervises intercampus financial control transactions.
6. Manages and supervises the staff and functional operations of the General Accounting Office.
7. Develops, implements, upgrades and maintains numerous accounting and control processes and automated systems to facilitate the processing of accounting information, its analysis and reporting.
8. Maintains and coordinates maintenance, training, oversight, and security of the Banner Finance system.
9. Ensures all transactions are fed into Banner from other systems on a timely basis including but not limited to fixed assets, accounts receivable and payroll.
10. Coordinates efforts of fiscal staff to ensure that all information is provided accurately and timely as requested by auditors during audit cycles by state comptroller's office.
11. Reconciles Banner control reports that will determine the cause for the system to be out of balance and analyzes suspended transactions daily.
12. Assists with all departments in the Finance and Accounting unit, as needed.
13. Other duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree with Major in Accounting or related field.
  • Five years of increasingly responsible accounting experience.
  • Experience reviewing and preparing financial statements, preferably with a College or University with complex systems.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated effective and efficient verbal and written communication.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree or CPA designation.
  • Higher education work experience, preferably with the State of TN.
  • Experience with Banner by Ellucian software.

    Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a criminal background check as mandated by Tennessee State University.
