GENERAL SUMMARY/ PURPOSE STATEMENT

Reporting to the Director of Principal and Major Gifts of the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Senior Associate Director of Development will manage the development team’s principal gifts program with oversight from the Director of Principal and Major Gifts and the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations. The Senior Associate Director will develop the vision and long-term strategy for the program in collaboration with the Associate Dean and the Director. While the Sr. Associate Director will have a portfolio of primarily principal gift rated prospects and donors, others on the team will have principal gift prospects and donors in their portfolios. Thus, the Sr. Associate Director will lead a highly collaborative effort to manage the entire principal gift portfolio, as well as develop strategies to identify new prospects. This position requires excellent judgment, political tact, advanced fundraising knowledge and a collegial and team-focused approach to achieving fundraising goals.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a strategic partner and internal counsel to the Director of Principal and Major gifts and the Associate Dean, helping shape strategy and implement the School’s principal gifts fundraising program.
  • In consultation with the Director of Principal and Major Gifts, lead a unified school-wide transformative donor program, managing BSPH gift officer input and collaborating with Johns Hopkins Office of Principal Gifts colleagues to build a list of currently affiliated and unaffiliated prospects, determine appropriate action and ensure necessary follow-through.
  • Manage a personal portfolio of approximately 60-75 principal level prospects (some of whom maybe jointly managed) and approximately 20-25 major gift level individual prospects.
  • Manage and lead a quarterly Principal Gifts prospect discussion, as a separate meeting or part of another prospect management meeting.
  • Develop new relationships with prospects through research and discovery.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Principal and Major Gifts, create a yearly, results oriented work plan to efficiently manage principal and major gift prospects through identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Work effectively with colleagues within the Bloomberg School of Public Health, as well as with those in other divisions and central development, to plan and execute fundraising strategies on behalf of Bloomberg School of Public Health, and to report on progress on a regular basis.
  • Serve as liaison to assigned departments and centers and serve as the principal gifts consultant across the school as needed.
  • Work effectively with advisory committee members, volunteers, deans, faculty, and senior administration.
  • Serve as the School’s liaison to the Central Principal Gifts team.
  • Collaborate with the Development Communications team on proposals related to specific fundraising projects, cultivation, and stewardship events.
  • Consult with Central Principal Gifts on all principal level proposals.
  • Oversee briefings for principal gift prospects which involve leadership engagement. This will be done in collaboration with the Development Communications team, as well as various central teams, as needed.
  • Manage special projects as assigned.
  • Regularly record and track progress through the School’s relationship management database and serve as a role-model of compliance with all University, School and Development & Alumni Relations administrative practices and policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (mandatory):

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree and five years related experience required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Advanced degree in public health, higher education or compatible field preferred professional front-line fundraising experience particularly focused on cultivating and soliciting six and seven-figure gifts from individuals is required. Eight to ten years related experience preferred. Successful major gift level ($100K+) fundraising required. This position requires someone with a strong commitment to and passion for the mission of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Ideal candidate will have the ability to thrive in an intellectually challenging, fast-paced, collegial environment. Political savvy, integrity, discretion and pragmatic consensus building skills required; mature judgment in handling sensitive and confidential information required. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills and a highly professional image with the ability to interact with faculty, staff, donors and volunteers at all levels required. Experience with strategic planning, issue-based fundraising and planned giving vehicles preferred. Ability to organize and establish objectives and priorities in a complex organizational environment required.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
