Position Summary:

The Influenza Research Institute (IRI) is looking for a skilled Laboratory Facility Technical Specialist to join the IRI Operations Team, and to lead the research facilities component within the team. The IRI is a complex research facility in which studies of viral pathogens are conducted and is subject to specific biosafety and biosecurity regulations. This individual works under the ultimate direction of the Principal Investigator to ensure that all programmatic elements are functioning in a safe and secure manner to facilitate laboratory research.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor of Science degree in engineering technology, mechanical or electrical engineering, the life sciences, or related field. Bachelor's Degree - Preferred Minimum

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Minimum of two years of experience in an engineering or technical field, facilities operations, laboratory, or relevant field.
Specific relevant work experience includes:
* Basic familiarity with the architectural, mechanical, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and controls aspects of facilities is required. A well-qualified candidate will have knowledge of infectious disease research laboratories and basic familiarity with the operations of specialized HVAC equipment and systems required for biological containment.
* Ability to read design drawings, specification sheets, and technical documents is required.
* Ability to create facility documentation and write standard operating procedures.
* A well-qualified candidate will have project management experience and the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects within the confines of time, budgets, and available personnel.
* A well-qualified candidate will have experience troubleshooting issues with laboratory or other small equipment and performing minor repairs on small equipment.
* Experience interfacing with building automation systems (BAS) is desirable.
* Knowledge of basic principles of laboratory and facility safety, biological and chemical hazards is preferred.
* Excellent written and verbal communication is required in conjunction with exceptional organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
* Ability to work independently on complex projects with minimal direction.
* Experience in the Biosafety Level-2 (BSL2) and Biosafety Level-3 (BSL3) environments is desirable.

Additional Information:

Will be the primary person to carry on-call phone to respond to after-hour alarms and track entry/exit of staff in containment area.

The successful candidate must pass a background check and be approved by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under 42 CFR 73.8 and the Criminal Justice Information Security Risk Assessment.

Must be willing to undergo and maintain a favorable background investigation and National Select Agent Registration security risk assessment.

Must be able to lift 40 pounds.

Must be able to be certified to wear respiratory protection and other necessary personal protective equipment. Ability to respond to emergency situations involving potentially infectious materials, ability to wear respiratory protection equipment and associated medical clearance;

Personal protective equipment is required in some aspects of the work.

At least average agility required in order to investigate/inspect laboratories and animal rooms and perform elevated work. Candidates must be able to physically work in rooms that require specialized biocontainment protective gowning and equipment. Must be able to climb ladders and easily move about confined areas.

Maintain a valid driver's license.

Ability to receive certain immunizations.

A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.

A period of evaluation will be required.
