Job Description

70% Teaching: Teach a minimum of three courses per semester (3-3), primarily in, but not limited to, Animation and Visual Effects practice and studies. Teaching requirements may also include (but are not limited to) introduction to film & media studies courses, introduction to video production courses, professional development, as well as directed studies and capstone courses. Recruit, advise, and mentor students and graduate teaching associates in a program with over 300 undergraduate and approximately 10 graduate majors. Hold regular office hours (at least three hours per week) and be available for appointments with students, faculty, and staff.

20% Service: Contribute to a growing film and media studies department in which production and studies are integrated. Faculty must share in the work of the department by participating in service including faculty meetings, departmental committees, curriculum and program development as well as prospective student and community outreach. Serve as faculty advisor to student clubs such as the Animation Club. Adhere to departmental, college, and university policies.

10% Research: Faculty members are expected to remain current in creative work and best practices in their field, as evidenced in an active creative research program in film and media production.

Evaluation of the requirements below will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in CV including creative portfolio, (3) letters of recommendation, and (4) teaching statement, student and/or peer evaluations, and sample syllabi.

1. M.F.A. or another terminal graduate degree (MA, PhD, or equivalent) in film/media production and studies, with a specialization in animation and visual effects, expected by start date of appointment (to begin as early as August 16, 2021).

2. Demonstrated skills and experience in contemporary animation and visual effects production methods and technologies.

3. Formal training and teaching experience in film/media production and studies as demonstrated by completion of a terminal graduate degree program and/or professional experience.

4. Demonstrated record of teaching excellence at the collegiate or equivalent level indicating expertise in teaching introductory film and media production and studies courses, upper-level undergraduate courses, and courses in animation and visual effects at all levels.

5. Willingness to participate in and lead course and curriculum re-design efforts and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in undergraduate teaching and mentorship.

6. Evidence of an ability to engage positively in the artistic and intellectual life of the Department of Film and Media Studies, the School of the Arts, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the University.

Position Overview

The Department of Film and Media Studies at The University of Kansas seeks an Assistant Teaching Professor in Animation and Visual Effects - Production Specialist to begin as early as August 18, 2021. This is a limited term appointment for three years, renewable after the third year. The successful candidate for this position must be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start date of the appointment. We expect candidates to have an M.F.A. or another terminal graduate degree in film/media or a related area expected by the start date of appointment. The candidate will teach three courses per semester at all levels.

The Department of Film and Media Studies is a growing and dynamic program with eight full-time faculty including internationally recognized scholars and filmmakers, over 300 undergraduate majors and minors, and approximately 10 graduate students. The department offers a comprehensive undergraduate and MA/PhD graduate curriculum.
