A postdoctoral fellow position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Jason A. Carlyon in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Virginia Commonwealth University. The successful candidate will participate in NIH -funded projects studying the arthropod vector-transmitted obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens, Orientia tsutsugamushi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Projects include bacterial effector characterization, bacterial modulation of host cell processes, signaling, ubiquitylation, adhesin-receptor interactions, vaccine development, and developing genetic manipulation approaches for these organisms. Highly motivated, hard-working, and technically skilled applicants are welcomed to apply.

Required Qualifications

Candidate must have a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree and have a strong background in cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, and any of the aforementioned research areas.
Candidates are expected to be very motivated for career development, committed to driving federally funded high impact and high-quality research, able to work independently, and have good written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience studying intracellular pathogens, bacterial pathogenesis, cellular microbiology, ubiquitylation, Nf-kappaB signaling and proficiency in genetic manipulation of bacteria, yeast toxicity and suppressor screening are areas of knowledge that are preferred.
