Position Description:

The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University - West campus invites applications for a full time, benefits eligible position in Applied Computing at the Lecturer level (open rank) to begin in August 2021.

About the School:

The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences (https://newcollege.asu.edu/mathematical-natural-sciences-degree-programs) is an interdisciplinary unit that encompasses computing, mathematics, statistics, biology, chemistry, forensics, and physics. The school is committed to (1) providing a personalized learning experience in the midst of the largest public university in the nation, (2) offering innovative coursework and hands-on experiences to prepare students for the technological, social and cultural challenges they will face, and (3) recruiting and retaining students and faculty from groups that have historically been underrepresented in the sciences.

The Applied Computing program enables students to acquire a computer science foundation and then explore the established knowledge and emerging developments in the high-demand areas of database systems, computer networks and cybersecurity. The Applied Computing team is a small (5 faculty members) but highly dynamic group that integrates funded research with educational activities aimed at developing and implementing effective teaching methodologies, innovative course materials, and learning tools.

Essential Functions of the Position:

The individual filling this position is expected to teach courses in the following areas: introductory programming (primarily in Java and Python), data structures and algorithms, and programming language paradigms. The typical teaching load is four courses per semester. Lecturers are also expected to work with colleagues within and outside the school to develop innovative curricula that enhance student access and success, manage Instructional Aides who assist with courses, and provide other school service as assigned. Lecturers are critical to the school’s mission, are appointed with the expectation of long-term employment, and actively participate in faculty meetings, decision-making, and service. Typical classes may include but are not limited to: ACO 100: All About Data: Design, Query, and Visualization (for non-majors), ACO 101: Introduction to Computer Science, ACO 102: Object-Oriented Programming, ACO 201: Data Structures and Algorithms, and ACO 240: Introduction to Programming Languages.

Qualifications 

Required Qualifications:

1. M.S. or higher degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, by time of appointment.
2. Previous teaching experience in computer science or related disciplines, OR experience in computing-related industry positions.
3. Ability and commitment to work with diverse populations and encourage student success.

Desired Qualifications:  

1. 3+ years of experience teaching at the college level.
2. Additional graduate coursework beyond the M.S. degree.
3. Experience using course management and automatic-grading software such as Canvas and Repl.it.
4. Experience in collaborative teaching efforts with other disciplines, supervising supplemental kinds of student learning or administrative duties related to teaching.
5. Extensive experience with multiple programming languages such as Java, Python, SQL, C/C++/C#, JavaScript and PHP.
6. Ability to teach discrete mathematical structures for computer scientists.
7. Experience or demonstrated commitment to incorporating the principles of justice equity, diversity, and inclusion in teaching and research.
