Position Summary:

The Horticulture Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is accepting applications for an Assistant Faculty Associate who will serve as Director of Allen Centennial Garden. The duties for this position are split between administration (70%) and instruction (30%). Administrative duties include serving as the Director of Allen Centennial Garden. Instructional duties include teaching courses in the Horticulture Department that make use of the unique educational opportunities provided by the Garden.

Director duties include the following responsibilities: Develop and implement a strategic plan for the Garden and its programs. Financial administration including budget development. Oversight of garden maintenance and design. Manage external relations including those with UW Foundation, donors, the Friends of Allen Centennial Garden. Orchestrate public relations, outreach, education, and networking related to the Garden. Other educational activities may include targeted workshop-type classes for continuing education or personal interest. Supervise Allen Garden personnel.

Instructional duties of this position include: Teaching two, for-credit, courses each year in the Department of Horticulture: a three-credit course offered during either the fall or spring semester and a one- to two-credit course during the summer. Courses must leverage the unique learning opportunities provided by the Garden. Specific subject areas of the courses will be developed in consultation with the Horticulture Curriculum Committee.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

MS required, PhD preferred, in horticulture, botany, or a related field.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

- Experience in public or private garden management or estate management preferred.
- Experience in fundraising, budget development, strategic planning, and grant writing preferred.
- Experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in horticulture or related disciplines preferred.
- Project management experience implementing construction or design projects from conception to completion preferred.

Allen Centennial Garden is the artful living laboratory and public botanical garden of the Horticulture Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Garden serves as an outdoor classroom for UW-Madison students and the surrounding communities, providing meaningful learning opportunities for visitors of all ages.

Candidates must have a strong disciplinary foundation in horticulture. Effective oral and written communication skills. Administrative experience related to a horticultural setting. Experience in donor relations or with non-profit groups. Ability to interact positively with constituents such as university personnel, students, donors and garden supporters to form alliances in support of the garden. Proven record of employee supervision including permanent staff and student workers. Strong organizational and time management skills.
