Exercise Science Faculty

Mount St. Joseph University (the Mount) is accepting applications for a full-time faculty position to join the Department of Exercise Science and Integrative Health beginning Fall, 2021.

Housed within the School of Health Sciences, t he Health and Exercise Science major provides foundational scientific knowledge and clinical applications to enhance wellness, quality of life, and physical activity across the lifespan. The curriculum encompasses a biopsychosocial model of health with an expanded emphasis on advocating for increased physical activity and exercise for all individuals and communities. The program prepares students to enter careers in the health, fitness, or wellness industries and apply for graduate professional programs in athletic training, dietetics, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, and public health.

The Mount is a private institution founded in 1920 by the Sisters of Charity emphasizing values, integrity, and social responsibility. The Department of Exercise Science and Integrative Health offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Exercise Science with concentrations in Clinical Exercise Prescription, Sport Performance and Active Aging and Health Promotion and a minor in Exercise Science and Fitness. We are dedicated to providing holistic, individual attention to students as they develop personal and professional skills.

The specific responsibilities of all teaching faculty include:

1. Supports the Mission of the University, School of Health Sciences, and the Mission, Philosophy, and Strategic Plan of the Department of Exercise Science and Integrative Health .

2. Participates in regular, special, and standing committees and other activities of the Department.

3. Contributes to the development, evaluation, and revision of the curriculum.

4. Contributes to the development and revision of departmental and student policies in relation to administration, admission, retention, evaluation, progression, graduation, and licensure.

5. Assists in the development and evaluation of the Programs Strategic Plan and the budget and in planning and decision making regarding major expenditures.

6. Acts in accord with the Programs professional and ethical standards.

7. Participates in groups designed to involve community agencies in program planning and evaluation.

8. Accepts leadership responsibilities within the Program.

9. Participates in the recruitment of qualified faculty and students.

10. Supervises the activities of adjunct lab instructors, if utilized.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

1. Selects, plans, organizes and implements learning experiences in assigned courses that assist students to meet course and program outcomes.

2. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the subject matter.

3. Demonstrates an ability to integrate related content areas.

4. Uses creativity in developing an interactive learning environment.

5. Evaluates students based on course outcomes, identifies strengths and areas needing improvement, and facilitates the development of strategies for improvement and mastery of the subject area.

ACADEMIC ADVISING

1. Interprets University, School, and Program policies for students.

2. Facilitates clarification and/or validation of course requirements, Program, University, and Accrediting policies when communicating with students.

3. Posts regularly scheduled times for student conferences and advising sessions.

4. Maintains professional boundaries and sets limits with students.

5. Makes appropriate referrals and assists students to seek professional counseling and remedial opportunities when necessary.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES

1. Demonstrates knowledge of current trends in healthcare, Health and Wellness, and disciplinary education and credentialing.

2. Demonstrates creativity in learning strategies, assessment, and clinical practice.

3. Demonstrates commitment to professional growth.

4. Actively participates in scholarly activity as required by the university and credentialing agencies.

5. Participates in scholarly and citizenship activities in the Program, School, and University, through professional organizations and/or the community.

6. Collaborates with colleagues in the department and in other disciplines

Qualifications

The ideal candidates will have the following:

• Advanced degree in Exercise Science, Health Education, Health Promotion, Health Psychology, Kinesiology, Nutrition, or Public Health. (Terminal degree required for an assistant professor or higher).
• A minimum of two years of professional experience working with clients/patients in the community, fitness center, hospital, employee wellness, and/or interscholastic/intercollegiate settings.
• Credentialing through nationally recognized certifications in exercise science, strength and conditioning, health coaching, health education, nutrition and dietetics, and/or public health (ACSM, CDR, NASM, NBC-HWC, NBPHE, NCHEC, NSCA, and/or NWI).
• Teaching experience in biomechanics, exercise physiology, exercise prescription, health promotion, kinesiology, motor development/control, and human performance (preferred).
• Experience with interprofessional practice and team-based care (preferred).
• Familiarity with CAAHEP, CoAES, and/or CASCE accreditation processes and standards (preferred).
