Job Description Summary

The Auburn University (www.auburn.edu) College of Agriculture’s Department of Poultry Science is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor – Animal Physiologist. The position is a nine (9)-month, tenure track position. The successful candidate will have a 60% research and 40% instruction appointment. The projected start date is August 16, 2021.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will develop and maintain a nationally and internationally recognized, extramurally (government and industry) funded research program in the area of avian physiology. The specific areas may include avian reproductive, endocrine, digestive, or stress physiology, or developmental. The candidate will be expected to actively seek extramural funding for their program and collaborate with other scientists within, but not limited to the Colleges of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine and/or Science and Mathematics as well as Extension specialists/agents and poultry industry leaders on avian physiology research. The ideal candidate will complement existing programs in nutrition, gastrointestinal development and health, growth biology, applied meat science, and food safety.

The candidate is also expected to actively engage in scholarly activity related to instruction, including, but not limited to teaching courses, participating in curriculum revision and enhancement, seeking funding for the teaching program, and mentoring undergraduate students. The incumbent will develop and teach two (2) undergraduate-level foundation poultry science courses and one (1) graduate-level course in animal physiology. The candidate’s teaching responsibilities and/or appointment may change in accordance with the candidate’s expertise and needs of the department. Development of a strong graduate student training program is expected. The candidate will participate in graduate (and undergraduate) education by mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, and publishing the research results with their students in reputable, peer-reviewed journals.

As a land-grant institution, all Auburn University faculty are expected to be supportive of and contribute to all three land-grant mission areas – Research, Teaching, and Extension – regardless of the assignment split specified in the position announcement.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include: 1) an earned Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Poultry/Animal Science or closely related field at the time employment begins; 2) animal physiology research experience and demonstrable ability to independently develop, conduct, and publish research in this area with avian species commensurate with the candidate’s experience; 3) possess excellent written and interpersonal skills to interact with diverse audiences, deliver educational materials, and mentor graduate students; 4) excellent interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with other faculty, students, and industry professionals; 5) demonstrated or potential ability to secure extramural research and/or teaching funding commensurate with the candidate’s experience. The candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Postdoctoral, teaching, and/or commercial poultry industry experience are desirable.
