Job Summary

The Nerman Museum is the largest (41,000 sq.ft.) contemporary art museum within the four-state region and is the only dedicated contemporary art museum in Kansas. The more than 1,900 object collection (valued in excess of $40 million) focuses upon works since 1980. Of particular note is the Nerman’s sculpture collection (sited throughout the campus), its Oppenheimer Collection (founded in 1992), Barton P. & Mary D. Cohen Collection (founded in 2011) and Collection Focus areas (located in college buildings across the campus). In 2006, JCCC was named one of the Top 10 universities or colleges in America for “Art on Campus.” The Nerman Museum enjoys a national and international reputation and largely serves Metropolitan Kansas City (population 2.3 million), Johnson County, Kansas, the region, and nation.

The Executive Director and Chief Curator provides the artistic oversight, strategic leadership and management expertise for the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art through their specialized knowledge of contemporary art and the varied disciplines of the museum field. The successful candidate will be an articulate and inspiring contemporary arts leader, fundraiser and relationship builder who can represent the Museum within the college, community, region and nation.

Required Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Art History or Fine Arts
Demonstrated progressive positions of advanced museum responsibility, culminating in Executive Director; Associate, Assistant or Deputy Director; or Chief/Senior Curator positions will be considered
Minimum 3-5 years in an advanced museum leadership position
Expansive knowledge of contemporary art
Record of successful and innovative exhibitions and programming
Demonstrated ability to manage/oversee financials
Demonstrated and considerable success in fundraising
Strong commitment to arts education
Excellent verbal, writing and relationship skills
Demonstrated ability to build, assess, interpret, and care for a major art collection
