Concord Academy, an independent college preparatory school for grades 9 through 12 located in Concord, Massachusetts, has a teaching opening in its Visual Arts Department in the spring semester.  Because the school is following a module schedule this year, the opening is for the term running March 22-April 28. The position is for one course, Fashion Design: Material Illustration.

Founded in 1922, Concord Academy is a renowned independent high school for individuals who go on to make their mark on the world. In a caring and challenging atmosphere, students thrive in partnership with talented educators, encouraged to find their voices and discover and develop talents as scholars, artists, musicians, and athletes. With approximately 400 boarding and day students, the CA community is vibrant, close-knit, and enlivened by a rigorous curriculum with wide-as-you-can-dream opportunities. This is a place where students love to learn, where creativity and trust are abundant natural resources, and where the history and literature of New England enrich us every day.

The school seeks to appoint an accomplished artist and an energetic, innovative educator with excellent interpersonal skill, a passion for working with adolescents, and a track record of building community in diverse environments. The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to the course, whose description is as follows:

Fashion Design: Material Illustration

Every garment begins as an idea expressed through images, drawings, and material exploration. In this introductory course, students focus on how apparel designers communicate their seasonal collection. It is a fundamental skill for all designers to effectively document and plan their ideas. Students explore their creativity through various styles of fashion illustration, create and present their conceptual inspiration through mood and tear boards, and plan out technical drawings of featured looks in their own designed collection. In addition, students engage in research and discussions about current fashion collections and fashion history. This course focuses on the 2D component of designing apparel and utilizes hand-drawing media such as colored pencil, graphite, ink, and watercolor, as well as digital tools such as Adobe Illustrator and Google Suite programs.

Concord Academy anticipates operating under a hybrid weekly schedule with learners both in person and on the screen in every class during the spring semester. Preference will be given to in person teachers. Candidates should be comfortable with technology and able to adapt to the changing conditions that the second semester will likely bring. Training will be provided for the HyFlex classroom setup as well as for our learning management system (Schoology) and online core tools.

We actively seek applicants who reflect and support our mission-driven commitment to creating and maintaining a diverse and inclusive school community. The school provides a competitive benefits package, and salary is commensurate with experience.

Interested candidates are asked to send a cover letter;  15-20 images of their own digital portfolio (with preference for objects and illustrations created by hand); 10-20 images made by their students, if possible; and current resume to:
