Position description: The College of Fine and Applied Arts is a dynamic and innovative group of seven academic departments, bringing together a variety of perspectives, experiences and real-world education to provide unique opportunities for student success. Its departments include Applied Design, Art, Communication, Military Science and Leadership, Sustainable Development, Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment, and Theatre and Dance. The college is thriving and supports over 3,500 undergraduate and graduate students, 219 full and part-time faculty and 30 staff. We are also proud of our nearly 15,000 alumni from across the college. The Dean, who serves as the academic leader of the college, will:

  • Provide outstanding leadership to realize the vision and achieve the academic goals of the college;
  • Support integrated strategic planning and institutional effectiveness initiatives;
  • Oversee strategic directions, personnel, curricula, and budgets for the college;
  • Advance and support diversity, equity, and inclusion across the college;
  • Promote a climate of student success for a diverse community of learners;
  • Preside at meetings involving the faculty of the college and appoint ad hoc committees to study special problems affecting the college;
  • Prepare periodic reports and keep the provost and executive vice chancellor fully informed of the state of affairs and needs within the college;
  • Engage departmental chairs and the council of the college in frequent appraisals of objectives, procedures, strengths, weaknesses of curricular programs;
  • Collaborate with faculty in a climate of shared governance;
  • Coordinate the assignment of classroom space and facilities among departments and plan for capital improvements; and
  • Collaborate with other members of the Academic Affairs team to achieve university objectives. 

Required Qualifications for this position are as follows:

  1. Earned terminal degree, including PhD, MFAor MID, in a field represented in the College of Fine and Applied Arts;
    2. Progressive administrative experience at the level of dean, associate dean, department chair or similar position;
    3. Distinguished record of scholarship/creative activity and teaching, and eligibility for a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor;
    4. Evidence of creating and fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff;
    5. Exceptional interpersonal communication skills and the ability to interact effectively, decisively, and transparently with academic leadership, faculty, students, staff, donors, and other stakeholders important to the college in order to build partnerships inside and outside of the college;
    6. Dynamic team-building and leadership skills with evidence of deep appreciation of, and support for, shared governance;
    7. Demonstrated experience with recruiting, retaining and supporting talented faculty and staff from underrepresented populations;
    8. Commitment to supporting disciplinary and interdisciplinary environments and curricula that lead to successful student recruitment, retention and graduation;
    9. Exceptional skills, experience, and evidence of success in strategic planning, fiscal planning, and resource management; and
    10. Successful experience in or demonstrated capacity for fundraising.

Special consideration will be accorded to candidates who demonstrate the following experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  1. Knowledge of accreditation processes and governing bodies related to programs in the college;
    2. Experience working in a college or school that houses a diverse range of departments and programs;
    3. Ability to foster excellence in teaching, scholarship and research while supporting the professional growth and development of faculty and staff; and
    4. Thorough understanding of the disciplines and programs that comprise the college.
