General Statement of Responsibilities
Responsible for organizing and carrying out structured learning processes for students in chemistry. Instructors participate in the full range of professional and college-related activities, including student advising, curriculum development, professional growth, departmental and college-wide meetings, committee activity, and community involvement.
Examples of Duties - Essential Functions
Instructs students in a classroom, lab, learning center, or other setting as appropriate during the day, evening or weekends.
- Advises students on matters of program goals and course requirements, scheduling office hours as needed.
- Prepares, distributes, and utilizes instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media, and other devices as appropriate.
- Develops, communicates, and utilizes a student assessment process and instruments, which are related to the state objectives of the course.
- Participates as a team member in departmental meetings and planning activities.
- Participates in curriculum planning and development as needed.
- Serves as a member of college-wide standing committees, screening committees, and other related activities as assigned.
- Participates in the development of the quarterly class schedule and the annual departmental budget; initiates purchase requests, travel requests, and work orders as needed.
- Engages in regular professional growth activity based on the objectives established in an approved professional manner.
- Represents the program and the college to the community, business, public agencies, and other organizations in a professional manner. May participate in college recruitment and is active in student retention.
- Responsible for departmental equipment; participates in periodic inventory, and provides for the security of facilities and instructional materials as appropriate to the department.
- Perform teaching responsibilities on more than one campus if required.
Screening Criteria
Education and Experience: A master's degree in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering is required, or a master's degree in a related field with 30 quarter hours (or 18 semester hours) of graduate credit in chemistry. Ability to teach biology, physics and engineering, in addition to chemistry, is preferred. The qualified candidate will have at least one of the following:
- Full-time, part-time or graduate assistant lower division college science teaching experience
- Full-time secondary science teaching experience
- Experience in curriculum development or preparation/evaluation of textbook and/or lab materials in chemistry
- Ability to teach major's level general chemistry and organic chemistry, as well as non-major's level introductory chemistry, introductory organic chemistry and introductory biochemistry
Knowledge
of: Sufficient knowledge of the
subject area taught; computer applications for communication and
learning, including, but not limited to, word processing, the
Internet, multi-media presentations; curriculum development; the
contemporary community colleges' mission, role in higher education,
and student population; and sensitivity to a diverse student body
and its needs; the role of accommodations under the Americans with
Disabilities Act; and different pedagogical methods, including
lecture, group activity, discussion, and individual instruction to
accommodate a variety of learning styles. Spreadsheets and other
computer applications preferred.
Ability
to: Communicate effectively and
respectfully with colleagues and students from diverse cultural and
socioeconomic backgrounds; work collaboratively as a member of an
academic department; demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching in the
subject area; participate in curriculum and program development;
participate in the student advising program and college-wide
efforts to improve student retention and success; demonstrate
experience or potential for innovation and creativity in both the
classroom and related educational duties, including the use of new
technologies; demonstrate a commitment to professional standards
and growth. Pass a criminal background check.
Additional Posting Information
This is a Full-Time Faculty
position (100%, 10 months/year) in the Science
department, which will begin in September
2021. Starting compensation will be in accordance with
initial step placement per the current Faculty CBA (Download PDF
reader) and the 2021-2022 Full-Time Faculty salary
schedule. Full-Time Faculty contracts are based on the Daily Rate
and the number of contract days in the academic year (typically 176
contract days for a 10-month position). Consideration will be given
to experience and educational achievement.
