The Population Sciences Biorepository (PSB) is seeking a motivated person to serve as Research Operations Lead. The PSB was created to support a high-quality molecular epidemiology program in the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center and to support population and translational scientists across Baylor College of Medicine. The PSB provides necessary risk factor and clinical data collection, as well as a centralized, cost-effective facility for processing and storage of biospecimens from large epidemiological and clinical studies. We also work closely with investigators to provide customized collaborative input to meet their academic needs, including providing aid in development of new protocols, writing papers, and in grant applications.

The ideal candidate will have a doctoral degree in epidemiology or public health with an emphasis on survey design and data management/analysis and have experience managing large-scale clinical research projects.

The Research Operations Lead is responsible for operational oversight of day-to-day activities in the PSB. The Lead is also responsible for collaborative interactions with researchers and vendors to provide consistent delivery of high quality, cost-effective services. This role requires the Lead to be responsible for management of core resources, budgets and staff including training and staff development. The Lead may also participate in the educational mission of BCM and PSB in the area of population and biospecimen sciences.

Job Duties
  • Helps oversee day-to-day activities of the core facility.
  • Provides oversight and support for the administrative and financial operations of the core facility.
  • Serves as point of contact between principal investigators, research staff, and institution.
  • Develops new questionnaires and surveys for various projects.
  • Creates and maintains research databases.
  • Reviews data and provides quality control/assurance.
  • Meets with core facility users to discuss new and ongoing projects.
  • Assists end users with data/specimen requests.
  • Assists with the preparation of quotes for customer projects.
  • Assists with billing for projects.
  • Assists in the preparation of annual and other reports.
  • Assists with the review and writing of Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Assists with the writing and submission of annual and other reports; reviews reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assists the Director in writing grant applications and manuscripts.
  • Monitors staff time and effort reporting.
  • Monitors budget for core facility.
  • May oversee multiple projects.
  • Supervises other members of the clinical and laboratory team.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Six years of relevant experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's or doctorate degree in epidemiology, public health, or related field.
  • Leadership skills require at least 1 year of supervisory experience.
  • Biobanking experience.
  • Must be able to work with BCM leadership and other staff to run the core in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a proven ability to assist in grant and manuscript preparation.
  • Must have well-developed interpersonal and organizational skills and be confident in approaching, motivating, and communicating with colleagues at all levels of the organization as well as external customers.
  • Requires experience with computer spreadsheets, databases, and data analysis programs.
