Salary

General summary/purpose:

The purpose of the Knowledge Map coordinator is two-fold: to write reports for both the ELA and Social Studies Knowledge Maps, and to coordinate the process of evaluating a Social Studies curriculum from the beginning until the end of a project.

The Johns Hopkins Institute for Education Policy (“Institute”) has developed tools to analyze a social studies curriculum in terms of the knowledge it helps students learn and apply. We conduct this analysis by “mapping” the knowledge domains that are implicit in the selection of the sources and texts that are discussed. This mapping enables policymakers to see not only the domains of knowledge that are opened up in the curriculum – and others that are missed – but also to what degree, and over what grade span. We also assess whether a given unit includes more than one perspective, and whether the teacher-facing materials encourage deliberation and disagreement. This is a one-of-a-kind instrument.

Note: This position does not provide visa sponsorship.

Specific duties & responsibilities:
The majority of the Knowledge Map coordinator’s time (70%) is spent in managing the Social Studies Knowledge Map process. This includes:

  • Identifying the materials to be reviewed from our partners’ online resources or hard-copy materials;
  • Upload materials into the Institute’s database;
  • Assign reviewers to a grade level and enabling access to the materials;
  • Ensure reviewers understand the process and fielding questions from reviewers throughout the review process;
  • Ensure timely delivery of reviews into the Institute’s database; and
  • Coordinate with the Institute’s database partners to ensure database integrity and respond to needs from the reviewers.

The remainder of the coordinator’s time (30%) is spent in writing reports that incorporate the key findings from the ELA and Social Studies Knowledge Map reviews in a timely fashion and according to the protocols of the Institute’s templates. This work includes:

  • Coordinate project timelines with the Institute’s project-management personnel;
  • Incorporate reviewers’ unit- and grade-level comments into the public-facing reports;
  • Follow the Institute’s style guides and conventional rules of grammar and syntax;
  • Recommend upgrades to the writing templates as needed; and
  • Collaborate with the Institute’s communications specialist to maximize public awareness of the Institute’s work and resources.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • 5 years years related experience required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • One year of administrative/academic related experience
  • One year of experience with professional writing
  • Some experience with social media strategies

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Must have strong writing skills, including the routine use of conventional grammar and syntax
  • High comfort level with technology, databases, and online communication tools
  • Rudimentary knowledge of the major domains of social studies in a K-12 environment

Supervisory responsibility (indicate the number and type of persons supervised by incumbent):

  • Teacher experts who conduct the reviews. Total number of experts: 8, with additional experts coming on board as needed.
