GENERAL SUMMARY

The mission of the Alder Graduate School of Education is to create opportunity and cultivate success for every student by recruiting and educating excellent teachers and leaders who reflect our schools’ communities. The Math Education Specialist will collaborate in building Alder’s educational program with P12 school partners, and in ensuring the realization of our vision: outstanding teachers and leaders change students’ lives and make the world a better and more just place

We are a small, entrepreneurial team looking for someone who enjoys working in a flexible environment which encourages creativity, autonomy, collaboration and excellence.  The Math Education Specialist Faculty role is a dynamic, multi-part position and will support Alder regions in a variety of areas including the Bay Area, California’s Central Valley, Central Coast, and Los Angeles.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Dean and working closely with the Alder GSE team to support the mission, vision, and core values of Alder GSE, the essential responsibilities of the Math Education Specialist include:

PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH
    Believe in and enact an asset-based, equity, and critical pedagogical approach to teacher education.  Support the development of beginning teachers who are able to combine research and practice in service of becoming scholar-practitioners.  Take a whole-child approach to education, emphasizing multiple aspects of child development and specific attention to social-emotional learning in the learning process. 
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
    Work closely with Dean and Alder Faculty to improve the academic program through course review, faculty development, and evaluation of program inputs and achievements, specifically in their content area of expertise. Design and teach multiple Alder GSE courses (in a four-term academic year) related to Math education, teaching, and assessment, and other topics. Commit to and embody a whole child, anti-racist, culturally relevant/sustaining, and inclusive perspective to education and teacher education that also centers and values the integration of theory and practice.  Serve as Course Lead as appropriate, guiding the work of adjunct faculty teaching the same section of the course taught by this role/content specialist faculty. Lead programming for clinical program supervisors in Math education. Design and lead seminar content as needed in all Alder regions in Math education. Serve as program supervisor as appropriate in Math education.

 

EXTERNAL PARTNERSHIPS
    Work closely as a member of the Alder Academic Team, accomplishing key responsibilities for program execution and improvement with P12 partners Work closely with Alder Academic Team to ensure successful work with other university partners Articulate cohesive Alder academic program core and opportunities for contextual differentiation alongside myriad Alder stakeholders Work through the four primary learning formats: seminars, online courses, course intensives, and mentor classrooms to ensure Alder realizes its mission and vision Find ways to bridge the partnership between P12 schools and the GSE to achieve the mission/vision

 

CULTURE OF SCHOLARSHIP
    Actively engage in research and contribution to the field of teacher education Work in concert with national partners to advance the field of teacher education by participating in local and national conferences and networks

 

COLLABORATION WITHIN ALDER GSE
    Collaborate with the Dean, Directors, and all Alder faculty to implement an effective program Assume leadership of institutional and academic initiatives as appropriate Collaborate in accreditation efforts including research, writing, and committee work 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

1) Required knowledge, skills & abilities:

 

Expertise in Mathematics Education

    Expertise in relevant content knowledge for teaching and pedagogical content knowledge for mathematics Evidence of an asset, diversity, equity, and justice-based pedagogical approach to mathematics and teacher education; an approach that is inclusive of neurodiversity and diversity of social identities (e.g, race/ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual identity, class).

Successful Experience as a TK12 Teacher

    Successful TK12 teaching experience: minimum of three (3) years in elementary, secondary, and/or special education classrooms Other relevant professional experiences in elementary, secondary, and/or special education educational settings Knowledge of the current context of California public schooling including diversity, California adopted P-12 content standards, frameworks, and accountability systems  Knowledge of diversity in society, including diverse abilities, culture, language, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

Success in Teaching Adults & Teacher Education

    Successful teaching of diverse groups of adult learners, preferably in teacher education Successful experience in teacher preparation in a higher education setting Successful experience coaching and developing diverse P12 educators

Engaged Scholar-Practitioner

    Effective professional practices in teaching and learning, scholarship, and service. Ideally has published in education or related field

Other skills

    Able to bring a powerful Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion lens to all work Believes that education transforms lives and that every student deserves the opportunity to thrive Excellent communication skills and experience, including in a digital environment, collaborating with diverse stakeholders  Passion for graduate schools of education and their communities Ability to work in ambiguous, complex, and rapidly changing environments Enthusiasm for the role, Alder’s mission, and vision

 

2) Minimum educational level:

    A doctoral degree, or in progress towards doctoral degree completed by June 2021 required Mathematics teaching credential (preferably in California)

 

3) Experience required:

    5 or more years of experience and success in related roles
