Salary: Starting salary range of $31,800 - $34,980 is based on the Lee College Classified Staff Salary Scale, B22. Placement on scale is commensurate with education and related work experience.

Job Summary/Basic Function:
This position is responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting the science laboratories, prepare reagent and media, inventory supplies used during the semester, setup for additional items for experiments, and when appropriate tutor students in assigned subjects.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Clean laboratory properly, handle and/or dispose of supplies and equipment to ensure safety within Microbiology, General Biology, and A&P laboratories.
  • Setup stations for lab instructions and monitor laboratories to ensure security of the apparatuses.
  • Ensure that proper etiquette and safety is used in the laboratory.
  • Maintain an inventory of the labs used during the semester.
  • Assist within the lab under the guidance of the instructor as requested.
  • Help instructor with lab practical within guidance of protocols and properly put equipment away.


Lee College Main Campus - Microbiology:

Will prepare for an average of 17 Microbiology lab exercises for 100 students per semester (60 students in the summer). Each of the Microbiology lab exercises may require multiple culture media, for which this position measures out the media, dissolves (sometimes by boiling), aliquots, and sterilizes them by autoclaving. Will also be in charge of the disposal of biohazardous wastes generated in the lab. These include solid wastes (autoclave and discard) and liquid media (autoclave and clean of containers). Cleaning duty includes slides (washes, sonicates, and removes residues with ethanol), test tubes (autoclave, wash, and remove labels with ethanol), and other preparing flasks and containers. Responsible for basic lab readiness: filling soaps, filling and autoclaving pipet tips, changing out flints, sanitizing lab racks and incubator, maintaining lab chemical and reagent stocks, etc. Document all of their tasks so one can provide the evidence needed in the Microbiology lab if questioned by others in the case for liability or other issues.

General and A&P Biology:

As needed, will prepare for an average of 16 lab exercises of Biology I, Biology II, Human Body, A&P I, and A&P II for up to approximately 800 students per semester (300 students in the summer as well). Will be in charge of the proper handling and disposal of the biohazardous waste generated in the lab. Cleaning duty includes housekeeping of glassware (wash, label removal, and distilled rinse or autoclaving), slides (wipes of slides that don't disrupt stains), and equipment (wipes that don't disrupt paintwork of models). This position will also follow the duties under the same guidance done in the Microbiology lab on basic lab readiness, slides, and inventory.

Other duties and responsibilities may include, but or not limited to:

  • Provide support for labs and special classrooms unique to the division.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate’s (or higher) degree with successful completion of eight (8) college credit hours in Biology
  • Have mechanical skills to troubleshoot problems in the labs or lab equipment(s)
  • Familiar with technology; able to use a computer
  • Familiar with general lab equipment (i.e., mechanical, optical, electrical, etc.)
  • Familiar with interfaces and sensors that are used in the lab (i.e., motion, EKG, force, rotary encoder, pH, pressure, etc.)
  • Familiar with laboratory software (i.e., LoggerPro, IT connection, Flash applets, etc.)
  • Able to communicate with and tutor students as needed
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed
