The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is seeking up to four tenure track faculty of all ranks for endowed positions in the Bloomberg American Health Initiative. Applicants should have expertise in at least one of the Initiative’s focus areas in the United States: environmental challenges, adolescent health, obesity and the food system, and violence. In addition, this search seeks to identify at least one faculty member who is committed to researching and addressing the impact of racism on health.

The Bloomberg American Health Initiative aims to improve health and save lives in the United States through education, research, and practice. Supported by a transformational $300 million gift from the Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Initiative is training a new generation of leaders from multiple sectors in the tools of public health, supporting research to generate new insights about what works, and championing innovative programs and policies that can become national models. Faculty members chosen through this search will participate in the leadership of these efforts. The Bloomberg American Health Initiative will provide an endowed position of 5 years (with the potential for renewal) for senior faculty and 3 years (without the expectation of renewal) for junior faculty for candidates chosen through this search.

The faculty member(s) will have a primary appointment in the department best aligned with their interests and discipline, and rank will be commensurate with experience. Joint appointments are encouraged. Applicants should be trained at the doctoral level (e.g., PhD, DrPH, MD, JD) in any discipline relevant to the Initiative’s focus areas. Applicants may come from any theoretical or practical orientation and utilize quantitative, qualitative, or other methodologies as relevant to public health and the applicant’s focus area of expertise. A commitment to translation, dissemination, and practice is a highly valued.

The search is open to all ranks. Successful applicants will demonstrate: a solid record of scholarship and extramurally-funded research commensurate with rank; strong skills to contribute to advancing their field and teaching; a commitment to addressing the challenge in their identified Initiative focus area; and strong capacity for multidisciplinary collaboration, leadership, and public health impact.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
