Job Description

The Department of Life Sciences at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Biology in Marine Microbial Ecology to begin fall 2021. Possible research areas include but are not limited to the role of microbes in aquatic food webs and biogeochemical cycling, microbial pathogens, microbial diversity or microbial physiological ecology. This position will further expand and complement our M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Marine Biology (http://www.marinebiology.tamucc.edu), and also contribute to our Coastal and Marine System Science Ph.D. program (http://cmss.tamucc.edu/). Typical teaching load for Marine Biology program Ph.D. faculty is 3 courses per academic year.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vigorous, externally funded research program, supervise graduate students, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses including Microbial Ecology, Geomicrobiology, and/or Oceanography, but may also design his/her own specialty courses. We encourage applications from candidates who can develop research that makes the most of our modern research laboratories and equipment, including those associated with our newly constructed 108,000 ft2 Tidal Hall Life Sciences Research Facility, Genomics Core Laboratory, Flow Cytometry Core Laboratory, Isotope Core Laboratory, and High-Performance Computing Cluster. We also encourage applications from candidates who can develop research that takes advantage of our new UNOLS vessel, which is a partnership with the University of Southern Mississippi. Field operations on the new UNOLS regional class ship with be available for research to our college in 2023. This vessel is 155 ft. with a 38 ft. beam and supports 16 scientists for up to 21 days of operations. Porting will be in Corpus Christi and Louisiana harbors.

Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. degree in Microbial Ecology, Microbiology, Marine Science, Oceanography, Biology or closely related discipline.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Postdoctoral experience.
  • Strong publication record in high-impact journals and active federally funded research.
