Position Summary:

The Research Study Assistant (research specialist) will work under the direction of Dr. Jacqueline Kruser, a health services and outcomes researcher and pulmonary and critical care physician, whose research focuses on improving healthcare delivery and decision making in the intensive care unit (ICU). Dr. Kruser's research program is currently looking for a research specialist who will have the opportunity to support and gain experience with the full spectrum of research activities, from preparation and maintenance of research and institutional review board (IRB) protocols through publication in the peer-reviewed literature. The immediate needs of the program include project management and research support for an NIH-funded study that includes qualitative research methods (interviews and focus groups), systems engineering methods, and development of new interventions that help patients, families, and clinicians in the ICU make difficult decisions. In addition, Dr. Kruser's research program includes projects that analyze administrative claims and electronic health record data. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, highly organized, detail-oriented problem solver who is both able to work independently and contribute to team science.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in social or health science, humanities, engineering, or related; OR appropriate combination of education and prior work experience.
Preferred:
MPH or Master's degree in a major such as social or health science, humanities, engineering, or related

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Required:
One or more years of experience working in a public health, community, or clinical health setting and/or one or more years of experience in clinical, health services, or social sciences research environment.

Preferred:
- Prior experience or coursework in social sciences or health sciences research, including with qualitative research methods
- Prior experience or coursework in the fields of industrial, systems, or other disciplines within engineering
- Experience with data collection and management; including use of REDCap or other survey tool creation software
- Experience with data analysis; including the use of statistical software packages (including STATA and/or R)

- Established scientific writing and dissemination skills (e.g., in prior publications or presentations)
- General knowledge of Institutional Review Board policies and procedures
- Proficiency in systematic, scientific literature searches (e.g., using PubMed) to support research
- Experience communicating with external customers (e.g., patients, customers, collaborators)

This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial Caregiver Check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and then every four years.
