The Mechanical Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, invites outstanding faculty candidates to apply for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level. This position is on a 9 month service period with an anticipated start date of September 16, 2021. University of Washington faculty are committed to excellence in teaching, world-class research, and exemplary service. The Mechanical Engineering department’s research and teaching portfolio covers all aspects of the broad field of mechanical engineering, including interdisciplinary work in engineering in health, robotics and controls, materials, advanced manufacturing, and alternative energy. The department currently has 38 full-time faculty, 408 undergraduates, 163 masters students, 115 PhD students and 18 postdoctoral researchers and continues to grow.  More information about the ME department is available at http://www.me.washington.edu. The successful applicant will be expected to provide innovative, high-quality teaching; to develop a vigorous, externally funded research program; and to contribute to the goals and missions of the department, college, and university.

Applicants must have a PhD or other foreign equivalent doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline by the date of appointment.

Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to: strong background in energy conversion and/or energy storage; ability to leverage the ME department's and the University's competitive advantages; potential to conduct world-class research and to innovate in the area of energy conversion and storage; and background and confidence to teach, mentor, and work with individuals from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.These include existing initiatives in manufacturing applied to renewable energy (Clean Energy Institute: https://www.cei.washington.edu), the development of marine-based renewable energy technologies (Pacific Marine Energy Center: http://www.pmec.us), and the development of applications for the use of earth-abundant materials in manufacturing and energy applications, including recycling (JCDREAM: https://jcdream.org). Another area of interest is the intersection between energy and (1) the leading-edge UW expertise in global health and epidemiology, and (2) the Population Health Initiative (https://www.washington.edu/populationhealth/).
