Assistant/Associate Professor

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

The Bouve College of Health Sciences has over 200 faculty members, with approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate students. It is the leading national model for education and research in the health, psychosocial and biomedical sciences and supports the University's mission of educating students for a life of fulfillment and accomplishment and creating and translating knowledge to meet global and societal needs.

The Department of Applied Psychology houses PhD and Masters programs in Counseling Psychology and School Psychology, as well as a Masters program in Applied Behavior Analysis and undergraduate minor in Health Psychology. Faculty research translates psychology principles to applied settings, including the design, evaluation, and delivery of interventions aimed at reducing risk and enhancing protective factors in children, youth, and families, and building resilient schools and communities. These activities are conceptualized in an ecological model centering on social justice within culturally diverse contexts. Research activities conducted by Applied Psychology faculty include close to 21 ongoing studies funded by more than 10 external sources.

The Department of Art+Design (in the College of Arts, Media and Design) offers fast-growing Master's programs such as the MFA and MS in Information Design and Visualization, MS in Game Science and Design, and MS and MFA in Experience Design. Our degrees are built upon well-established undergraduate theory and practice programs with an emphasis on bringing innovative and engaging works of art, media and design into the public sphere. One of CAMD's strategic focuses is on Data and Design, which encompasses data visualization but also moves to use design as a critical field to interrogate the nature of data itself. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Center for Design https://camd.northeastern.edu/center-for-design/. CAMD also houses a PhD in Interdisciplinary Design and Media. The research developed in this PhD program engages with human experiences through interdisciplinary design approaches, and investigates new forms of digital media and data-driven communication across diverse disciplines.

About the Opportunity:
The Departments of Applied Psychology and Art + Design at Northeastern University seek candidates for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Intensive Data Collection and Data Visualization. Ideal candidates will have expertise and interest in applying analytic techniques to diverse areas of applied psychology and/or design. This may include research using mobile health data, digital phenotyping, and examining changes in multi-level systems, or other forms of densely sampled longitudinal data (e.g., social media, EMA, geospatial, psychophysiological). Interest and experience with data driven design processes is desired. The areas of application of these techniques may involve a broad range of topics including but not limited to: mental health, prevention and health promotion, academic wellbeing and outcomes, learning and individual differences, equity and social justice issues, data visualization, and visual design. Candidates should have experience in, or a commitment to, working with diverse student populations in a culturally diverse work and educational environment. Women, candidates of color, differently abled and gender non-conforming candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be jointly appointed in the Departments of Applied Psychology and Art + Design. The successful candidate will be able to teach a variety of classes in their area of expertise to graduate students in Applied Psychology with particular interest in candidates with the capacity to teach statistical sequences. The candidate will also teach in undergraduate and graduate Design programs in CAMD such as Graphic and Information Design (BFA), Interaction Design (BFA), Experience Design (BFA/MS/MFA), Information Design and Data Visualization (MS/MFA) or in the Interdisciplinary Media and Design program (PhD).

Responsibilities include: (a) mentoring students at all levels (e.g., serving on capstone and dissertation/thesis committees); (b) leading an active line of funded research; (c) teaching graduate courses in both departments, and (d) providing service at the Department, College, and University levels.

Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications include: (a) earned doctorate in Applied Psychology (e.g., Clinical, Counseling, School), Behavioral Science, Information Science, Quantitative Psychology, Human-computer Interaction, or a related field required by the appointment start date; (b) documented teaching experience (and documentation of teaching effectiveness, if available); (c) evidence of a robust research portfolio and demonstrated extramural funding (or the promise to secure such funding) by appointment start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

Desirable qualifications include: licensure and/or certification in one's field; demonstrated expertise and interest in applying analytic techniques to diverse areas of applied psychology and/or design. This may include research using mobile health data, digital phenotyping, and examining changes in mental health outcomes in multi-level systems, or other forms of densely sampled longitudinal data (e.g., social media, EMA, geospatial, psychophysiological).

Salary Grade:

Salary will be determined, commensurate with experience.
