Department of Music Teaching and Learning

Assistant Professor, Music Teaching and Learning (MTAL)

The University of Southern California Thornton School of Music invites applicants for a full-time faculty position in Music Teaching and Learning. The appointment is Tenure-Track and at the rank of Assistant Professor. The appointment begins August 2021.

Combining the benefits of a world-class conservatory and a leading research university, the USC Thornton School of Music offers students the opportunity to pursue a thorough music education in a real-world context. Thornton offers students a full range of musical disciplines across a demanding innovative curriculum, and the opportunity to work with a faculty of national and international renown.

The student body at USC is extraordinarily diverse: it is racially and ethnically a majority/minority population with a full range of expressions of gender, ability and sexual identities which we embrace as a source of institutional strength and community pride. The University’s commitment to building an academic environment hospitable to this wide range of diversity is full and complete. To that end, we are seeking to create as diverse a pool of candidates as possible; one which reflects the broad diversity of identities and experiences that comprise the country as well as the field of Music Teaching and Learning (MTAL).

The USC MTAL Department supports selective MM and DMA majors and plays an important role in the academic training of the School’s graduate population.  The MTAL faculty is highly regarded for its engagement in programs of study that embrace a wide range of music education, throughout the lifespan both in school and community settings.  A special aspect of the graduate program is a concentration and degree in community music.

The ideal candidate for this position is a teacher of outstanding, demonstrated ability who is willing to contribute fully to the artistic and intellectual life of the Thornton School, to participate in Thornton’s revision of its undergraduate and graduate curricula, and to engage dynamically in the training of all our music students.  Ability to execute and publish original research in fields of study consistent with the profile of the Department is required.  Significant experience in performing, conducting, or composing is particularly desirable.

Duties

Principal duties will include some combination of the following: 1) participation in teaching the graduate research sequence, including the introduction and more advanced courses; 2) offering courses in the philosophy/history of music education with a special eye toward contemporary issues and courses consistent with departmental priorities such as community music, psychology/sociology of music, music and neuroscience, creativity, and music technology; 3) advisement of graduate students in and outside of the department; and 4) service for department and university by participation in faculty meetings, School of Music committees, and University committees.

Qualifications

Successful candidates must have a completed doctorate in music education and have a record of teaching at the K-12 level.  Successful teaching at the college level is highly desirable. A record of publication by respected publishers and national/international journals in the field of music teaching and learning and related fields is expected. Successful applicants will also be expected to have a record of experience and accomplishment working in a highly diverse environment and of promoting social justice, equity and inclusion in the work that they do and in their approach to the profession.

Review of applications will begin on February 1, 2021.

Interested candidates must apply through the USC online system. Candidates are asked to provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and a 1-page diversity statement that is tied to the candidate’s personal teaching philosophy.  The vitae should have the names and contact information for 3 individuals that would be willing to supply letters of reference.  Do not send other materials, but additional materials may be requested at a later date.  In most cases, materials will not be returned.
