About the Position: The full-time, tenure track Academic Counselor will enjoy a 185- Day work schedule. The position begins on Monday, August 16, 2021, pending continued funding and Governing Board ratification. Classes and academic counseling may be in a traditional 'in person' setting once it is safe, online or hybrid format, scheduled over summer and/or winter months, and at various campus locations; days, evenings, and/or weekends.

About the Department: The Cabrillo College Academic Counseling Department is part of the Counseling and Educational Support Services (CESS) Division, which is staffed with tenured and adjunct counseling faculty. The Counseling team is dedicated to providing current information and comprehensive counseling services to a diverse student population. Counselors assist students in the identification of career and educational goals, educational planning, and provide follow-up services to support students with their educational plans. Counselors are required to stay current with career/occupational program information and requirements, as well as four-year university transfer requirements.

About the College : Situated on Monterey Bay in the county of Santa Cruz, California, Cabrillo College is highly regarded for its success of transfer and career education, and currently serves over 11,400 students each semester. Cabrillo College transfers many of its students to three nearby universities – the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC), San Jose State University (SJSU), and California State University at Monterey Bay (CSUMB). Cabrillo's career education is closely connected to the nearby agricultural and farming industries and well as the Silicon Valley business environment.

Starting Salary Range : $60,422 to $92,684 per year, salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the 185-Day faculty salary schedule is Class 6, Step 9. An annual doctoral stipend of $3,816 is granted to eligible faculty.

Examples of Duties

Position responsibilities include providing Cabrillo students with academic, transfer and career counseling. Assignment requires driving for position-related activities; general counseling responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Provide students with workshops, career and educational goal-setting, educational planning, and ongoing follow-up services.
• Provide academic, career/vocational, and personal counseling and student advisement.
• Provide academic counseling to Career Technical Education (CTE) and transfer-bound students.
• Assist students in assessing abilities, aptitudes, interests, work values systems, and personality patterns related to occupations and careers.
• Participate in department meetings and work groups that develop, evaluate and deliver services that support student success. Additional professional assignments include attendance at faculty/college meetings, curriculum and program development, and related duties as required or assigned.
• Teach assigned Counseling and Guidance classes and Career Exploration classes, which may include evening or off-campus assignments.
• Participate in participatory governance committees, processes, and initiatives such as Guided Pathways.
• Maintain timely and accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and academic progress.
• Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled office hours.
• Cooperate with and participate as may be required in District investigations and/or student grievance matters of alleged unlawful harassment, discrimination, and retaliation.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.
• Complete required District trainings such as Title IX, Mandated Reporter, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)/Diversity/Elimination of Bias, Workplace Safety, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education from a U.S. Department of Education recognized accredited organization and licensure qualifications:

• Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR
• Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees AND a current California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), OR
• The equivalent OR
• A lifetime California Community College Instructor Credential in one of the above required fields

Required Professional Expertise:

• Currency and depth of knowledge in the applicable field, curriculum development and assessment of student learning outcomes
• Knowledge of and commitment to the community college philosophy, including Guided Pathways
• Knowledge of and commitment to equity-minded and culturally responsive teaching and academic counseling strategies and practices that enhance student success
• Demonstrated responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning)
• Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others
• Effective oral and written communication skills and effective use of technology

Required Discipline Specific Requirements/Licensure:

• Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California driver's license and a safe driving record during the course of employment.

Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations:

• Successful teaching and academic counseling experience in a higher-education institution.
• Successful online teaching experience.
• Experience counseling with and/or demonstrated understanding of the issues faced by veterans, current or former foster youth, basic skills students, first-generation college students, students with disabilities, and other minoritized groups.
• Experience counseling and/or demonstrated understanding of the issues faced by community college students, including international students and students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) majors.
• Career counseling experience which includes interpreting results of career inventories.
• Experience teaching Career Exploration courses and/or workshops.
• Experience developing education plans for CTE and transfer students seeking admission to University of California (UC), California State University (CSU) and private universities.
• Demonstrated interest and willingness to teach online courses.
• Demonstrated knowledge of CTE and transfer degree/certificate program requirements and petition processes.
• Ability to utilize a variety of technology tools, student information systems, and online resources to effectively support students.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English/Spanish.
