James Madison University (JMU) invites applications and nominations for a creative and forward-thinking leader to serve in the position of Dean of The Graduate School. The Graduate School promotes the university’s commitment to addressing complex, real-world problems, and contemporary issues with an array of excellent graduate programs in seven academic colleges at JMU. It is the mission of The Graduate School to support, facilitate, and promote excellence in lifelong education through graduate programs of distinction, innovative outreach programs, and a diverse student body. The university offers 60 graduate programs to students on our campus and beyond, primarily at the master’s level, but also leading to Educational Specialist and doctoral degrees, including Doctor of Audiology, Doctor of Musical Arts, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Psychology degrees.

JMU is a selective, public, comprehensive university with an enrollment of more than 20,000 students, of whom over 1,800 are graduate students. JMU is located in the scenic Shenandoah Valley, 130 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. The seven colleges within the university include: Arts and Letters, Business, Education, Health and Behavioral Studies, Integrated Science and Engineering, Science and Mathematics, and Visual and Performing Arts. For twenty years, the U.S. News and World Report has ranked JMU either first or second among the top public master’s-level schools in the south. Ten graduate programs are ranked nationally by U.S. News and World Report. The university is known for the quality of its students and faculty, community engagement, international programs, and academic excellence. More information about the university may be found at http://www.jmu.edu.

A large university with a focus on undergraduate education, JMU has been clear in emphasizing graduate education that enriches our overall array of academic programs, and seeks to be responsive to local, regional, and national needs. As the university moves to Carnegie R2 status, the dean will work with the colleges where graduate programs are housed to nurture a diverse and growing range of graduate programs led by outstanding faculty. There is opportunity for creative program development and strategic leadership in collaboration with colleges and outreach programs.

JMU seeks a person with considerable experience in academic administration and graduate education, with a record of accomplishment in focusing on the welfare of students and the ability to work with others to achieve transformative change. The Graduate School Dean collaborates with other deans, program directors, unit heads, and faculty across the institution to develop curricula and academic programs that address discipline, institutional and societal needs. Responsibilities include representing The Graduate School and university to internal and external constituents and supporting professional outreach and service regionally, nationally, and internationally. The dean chairs the Graduate Council, which consists of program directors and graduate faculty appointed by the president and works with college deans and graduate directors to advance the mission of graduate education across the university. Each dean at JMU provides academic, intellectual, and administrative leadership, reports directly to the provost, and serves on Academic Council, the senior academic leadership team at JMU. In collaboration with others, the dean is responsible for securing, overseeing, and managing resources necessary to pursue The Graduate School’s mission.

The successful candidate will have:

  • An earned terminal degree and experience sufficient to merit appointment, with tenure, at the rank of full professor in a JMU academic unit
  • Strong administrative and interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style
  • Organizational leadership experience and success in an academic setting
  • A commitment to the welfare and success of graduate students
  • Appreciation of the role of graduate education at a primarily undergraduate institution
  • A strong record of teaching, research, mentoring faculty and students, and university/professional service

  • A strong record of success in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • A strong record of success in promoting student and faculty research
