Title Assistant Professor of Sociology Posting Number F00158JP Department Sociology Position Summary

The Department of Sociology at Bowdoin College seeks applicants for a tenure-track position in the fields of Asia/Asian America and Global/Transnational Sociology beginning July 1, 2021. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence and promise in teaching and research. We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong commitment to undergraduate liberals arts education, committed to the instruction and support of a diverse student population, and who will enrich and contribute to the racial, ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic diversity of the Department and College faculty. A Ph.D. by the start of the appointment is required.

Bowdoin has highly motivated students and a two-course teaching load per semester. The successful candidate will teach courses in their areas of expertise and core courses in Sociology, including Introduction to Sociology, Research Methods, and our Senior Capstone Seminar. We are especially interested in candidates who can offer elective courses not currently offered by our tenure-track faculty, courses that reflect the interests of our increasingly diverse student body, and courses that make connections with interdisciplinary programs on campus, including but not limited to Asian Studies.

Bowdoin requires its faculty to have a strong commitment to research and a promise of long-term successful scholarly engagement as well as a dedication to teaching excellence in a liberal arts environment. To that end, we encourage candidates to explicitly discuss how they might integrate their scholarly/research agenda with their teaching and service goals (e.g., how they might see their expertise supporting the diversity and inclusion goals of the College). Bowdoin College offers opportunities for professional development, a fully-funded, year-long junior sabbatical leave (after three years of teaching and successful reappointment), and regular, generously funded, post-tenure sabbaticals.

Bowdoin is a community that warmly welcomes people of all backgrounds. We encourage applications from candidates committed to the support of an inclusive campus community and those who will enrich and contribute to the College’s multifaceted diversity. We recognize that recruiting and retaining faculty may involve considerations of spouses and domestic partners. To that end, where possible, the College will attempt to accommodate and respond creatively to the needs of partners and spouses of members of the faculty.

Bowdoin College accepts only electronic submissions. Please submit: 1) a cover letter that details your scholarly research agenda, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and of your commitment to inclusive excellence in the classroom (for a description of inclusive excellence, please consult the following resource https://www.aacu.org/making-excellence-inclusive); 2) a curriculum vitae; and 3) the names and contact information for three references who have agreed to provide letters of recommendation upon request.

Review of applications will begin February 1, 2021. We expect to conduct this search remotely in consideration of the health and safety of candidates and the Bowdoin community.

Founded in 1794 on the Maine coast, Bowdoin is one of the oldest and most selective coeducational, residential liberal arts colleges in the country.
