Position Summary:

UW-Madison invites applicants for a tenure track (academic 9-month) position at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences. This newly-created position is supported by the Dairy Innovation Hub in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. The Hub is an exciting new initiative at three of the leading UW agricultural schools (UW-Madison, UW-Platteville, and UW-River Falls) and fosters dairy research, education and outreach in the priority areas of Stewarding Land & Water Resources, Ensuring Animal Health & Welfare, Growing Farm Businesses & Communities, and Enriching Human Health and Nutrition. The position will support the, Ensuring Animal Health & Welfare, priority area, and will have a tenure home within the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences. The position carries a commitment to the three functions of research, instruction, outreach, and service, as well as professional and university service as appropriate to the position and rank. Additionally, as a Hub supported position, the faculty member will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other Hub researchers, pursue Hub funding opportunities, and participate in Hub programs. Principal Duties:

The incumbent will perform research, teaching, and outreach in their area of expertise in ways that are relevant to dairy agriculture and related fields.

This individual will develop an extramurally funded and internationally recognized research program in the area of rumen microbial physiology as it relates to animal biology and advancing sustainability of animal sourced food systems. Primary research emphasis should be in dairy cattle but cross-species collaboration is encouraged. A researcher in this discipline can develop an independent research program in areas such as, but not limited to: understanding and modeling interactions of host and microbial community as affected by diet and environment to impact animal phenotypes; microbial genomics and metabolomics; fermentation of feedstuffs; volatile fatty acid production, absorption, and host utilization especially as related to rumen development or rumen efficiency; synergies and cross-feeding between microbes; dynamics of rumen protein fermentation and generation of rumen microbial protein; impacts of microbial species on rumen and host animal efficiency. Programs that contribute to research related to efficient use of crop, land, and water resources to ultimately contribute to system-level sustainability are desirable.

The incumbent will teach classes in their department which also contribute to college undergraduate and graduate programs. Teaching responsibilities will be commensurate with college expectations and consistent with the teaching loads of other departmental faculty.

The individual will be expected to facilitate interdisciplinary efforts and collaborative efforts within the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and the US Dairy Forage Research Center.

A 600-cow dairy research facility as well as a beef, sheep and swine research facilities are located 30 minutes from campus (Arlington, Wisconsin), a dairy heifer research unit 2 hours from campus (Marshfield, Wisconsin), and a beef unit (Lancaster, Wisconsin) are also available.

Collaborations across campus, the Dairy Innovation Hub, and with countless industry and stakeholder partners results in leveraging expertise, farms and laboratory facilities. Additionally, the Department has a long-standing collaboration with the US Dairy Forage Research Center (DFRC), a research center of the US Department of Agriculture devoted to the optimization of the use of forages in improving dairy cattle production and sustainability. Employing experts in soil chemistry, agronomy, dairy cattle genetics, dairy nutrition and microbiology work on long-term, interdisciplinary research projects aimed at developing cost-effective solutions for US dairy farmers. The center is located on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus and maintains two research dairy herds at Prairie du Sac, WI and Marshfield, WI.
