About the Position: The full-time, tenure track instructor will enjoy a 175 - Day work schedule. The successful candidate will teach both credit and non-credit ESL classes, which includes speaking, listening, composition, reading, vocabulary development, and grammar. This potentially includes beginning to advanced sections of English as a Second Language (ESL) courses including, but not limited to:
  • Beginning ESL
  • Intermediate ESL
  • Advanced ESL
The position begins on Monday, August 16, 2021, pending Governing Board ratification. Classes may be in a traditional 'in class' setting once it is safe, online or hybrid format, scheduled over summer and/or winter months, and at various campus locations; days, evenings, and/or weekends.

About the Department : The English as a Second Language (ESL) department is looking for faculty to join us in our pursuit of student success and professional excellence. The ESL program serves both residents, as well as a number of foreign students from all over the world. The department is designed to prepare non-native speakers of English to succeed in both academic and vocational goals by helping them read, write, understand, and speak American English at the college level. A variety of instructional approaches, techniques, and strategies are used.

About the College: Situated on Monterey Bay in the county of Santa Cruz, California, Cabrillo College is highly regarded for its success of transfer and career education, and currently serves over 11,400 students each semester. Cabrillo College transfers many of its students to three nearby universities – the University of California at Santa Cruz, San Jose State University, and California State University at Monterey Bay. Cabrillo's career education is closely connected to the nearby agricultural and farming industries and well as the Silicon Valley business environment.

Starting Salary Range : $57,157 to $87,673 per year, salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the 175-Day faculty salary schedule is Class 6, Step 9. An annual doctoral stipend of $3,816 is granted to eligible faculty.

Examples of Duties

  • Teach assigned classes, which may include evening or off-campus assignments
  • Participate in participatory governance committees, processes, and initiatives such as Guided Pathways
  • Maintain timely and accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and academic progress
  • Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled office hours
  • Cooperate with and participate as may be required in District investigations and/or student grievance matters of alleged unlawful harassment, discrimination, and retaliation
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff
  • Complete required District trainings such as Title IX, Mandated Reporter, EEO/Diversity/Elimination of Bias, Workplace Safety, etc.


Minimum Qualifications

Required Education from a U.S. Department of Education recognized accredited organization and licensure qualifications:
  • Master's in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis or education with a TESL emphasis OR
  • Bachelor's in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND a Master's in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech or any foreign language OR
  • Possess a lifetime California Community College Instructor credential in English as a Second Language OR
  • Equivalent

  • Knowledge of and commitment to equity-minded and culturally responsive teaching strategies and practices that enhance student success
  • Demonstrated responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning)
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and effective use of technology
  • Comprehensive, up-to-date knowledge of, and experience with, current, effective second language acquisition methods
Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations:
  • Successful teaching experience in a higher-education institution.
  • Successful online teaching experience.
  • Interest or experience serving as department chair.
