The Opportunity

The Department of Music at MacEwan University is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Performance area (Drums and Percussion), starting July 1, 2021. MacEwan University’s Bachelor of Music (BMus) focuses on the performance, interpretation, creation, production and culture of jazz and contemporary popular music, and offers seven routes of study: Performance major; Composition major; Recording and Production major; General, without minor; General, Music Technology and Production minor; General, Music Career Management minor; General, Music Education minor. The Department of Music is situated within the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications (FFAC) of MacEwan University, in Allard Hall, a new state-of-the-art facility located in close proximity to the downtown arts district.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a significant national profile as a drummer and percussionist, with a demonstrable record of performances, live and recorded, and will have proven experience and mastery in a broad range of styles. The successful candidate possesses a MMus or equivalent master’s degree, and is a highly experienced educator who has a strong interest in teaching as a career priority and holds an extensive record of teaching at the post-secondary level, including private studio and classroom teaching, and ensemble directing. Experience in administration at the department level is an asset. The ability to work effectively in a collegial environment is very important.

As an Assistant Professor, duties include classroom teaching (primarily drums/percussion master classes), and ensemble directing. As Section Head, Drums and Percussion, duties include supervising the drums/percussion-area instructors and overseeing courses and course outlines, adjudicating auditions and juried recitals, and organizing concerts and other events associated with the drums/percussion area. Depending on experience and credentials, the successful candidate may be required to develop curriculum in the core area and teach courses in other areas of the BMus. Scholarly research, creative activity, and service to MacEwan governance at the Department, Faculty and University levels are also essential and will form part of the negotiated workload for the successful candidate.
