The Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin invites nominations and applications for an established Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon to lead an exciting new initiative as the Inaugural Chief, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care. This individual will also serve as the Surgical Director of Ascension Texas Cardiovascular Service Line. The Inaugural Chief and Director will be provided with the resources and governance structure to build a distinctive cardiovascular and thoracic surgery program, as well as, lead the strategic planning and development of a regionally, nationally, and internationally renowned Heart and Vascular Institute.
As part of the University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation's leading research universities, the Dell Medical School is pursuing innovation in the redesign of health care delivery, research, and interdisciplinary and inter-professional education. The School is partnering closely with Ascension Texas, part of a national health care system, to transform health care and revolutionize the way people get and stay healthy. The collaboration has resulted in the formation of Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas as the primary teaching hospital for Dell Med and the centerpiece of a new health district in downtown Austin. The hospital is a new facility built, owned and operated by Ascension Texas. The health system has played a major role in shaping Dell Medical School's signature curriculum and research efforts, which include a focus on creating a more efficient and effective health care system and training future physician leaders.
The foundation for a newly created Heart & Vascular Institute is the Seton Heart & Vascular Institute (SHVI), a multidisciplinary cardiovascular clinical practice of 45 providers delivering care across 11 counties in Central Texas. In addition to Dell Seton Medical Center, cardiovascular services are provided at three other facilities with endovascular/vascular surgery capabilities within the Ascension Texas system including Seton Medical Center Austin, the region's leader in complex cardiovascular care. The SHVI consists of providers from all cardiovascular subspecialties including vascular surgery, interventional cardiology, structural heart, noninvasive cardiology, EP, CHF/VAD/transplant, and prevention.
Qualifications
The candidate will have a prominent record of professional achievement, clinical credibility and an international reputation in the field of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. As such, they would be expected to qualify for appointment at the rank of Professor in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at Dell Medical School. The candidate should also have an exceptional leadership record at a top ranked medical school, academic health center (preferred) or health system and ideally, experience working in an interdisciplinary environment. Their senior level administrative expertise has included strategic and operational planning including value-based health care payment and delivery models, preparation of budgets, experience with specialized professional accreditation, good financial stewardship, effective personnel organization and management including a demonstrated commitment to excellence in diversity and inclusion, as well as, success in recruiting trainees and faculty.
