Dean, College of Engineering

California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) seeks a visionary, innovative, and collaborative Dean of the College of Engineering (COE) to lead the staff, faculty and department chairs. COE is known for developing innovators who design and implement practical solutions to meet present and future societal challenges. The Dean will build on the College's strengths to make it the choice for a diverse group of students seeking to complete their undergraduate or graduate studies in engineering or computer science. The new Dean is expected to take office in July of 2021.

Located in Southern California, near major engineering employers in Los Angeles and Orange counties, COE (https://www.csulb.edu/college-of-engineering) maintains strong connections with industry partners. Its emphasis on practical applications and project-based learning makes graduates highly sought after by industry.

COE offers 11 undergraduate programs in engineering, computer science, and engineering technology--including the newly launched Biomedical Engineering major--as well as graduate degree programs. Undergraduate programs provide broad education to prepare students for professional careers and continuing academic study. Graduate degrees allow advanced study in seven areas of engineering and computer science. An interdisciplinary master's degree in engineering is available, and a Ph.D. in Engineering and Computational Mathematics is offered jointly with the Claremont Graduate University.

The College of Engineering ranks high for affordability and diversity. Payscale.com ranked the College seventh in terms of graduates' mid-career earnings and ROI and the American Society of Engineering Education ranked the College first for the ratio of B.S. graduates to faculty, seventh for the number of engineering bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanic students, and fifteenth for the number of engineering bachelor's degrees awarded to Asian-American students. Almost 40% of the fall 2020 student-body in the College are Hispanic/Latino.

The Dean is the chief academic officer of the College and reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate from an accredited institution in an engineering or computer science field; an excellent record of teaching, scholarship and service that would warrant appointment at the rank of tenured Full Professor in one of the disciplines housed in the college; and a demonstrated record of successful activities to foster diversity, equity, and an inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff.
