Job Description

The GlycoMIP User Facility at Virginia Tech is an NSF-funded national resource for the synthesis and characterization of carbohydrate-based materials, advancing the field of glycomaterials through both research and education. Central features of the facility at Virginia Tech include automated glycan synthesizers and materials characterization tools.

The Technical Manager will report to the GlycoMIP Managing Director and the Director of the GlycoMIP Materials Facility. The successful candidate will work with scientists and other GlycoMIP staff to conceive and execute carbohydrate-related research projects. The individual will also participate in training and outreach activities as required. The Technical Manager will be a team player to manage the infrastructure, as well as oversee day-to-day User Facility operations, including synthesis, chromatographic, and mass spectrometry resources.

Required Qualifications

• PhD in Chemistry or related field PhD awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year of eligibility remaining.
• Experience with carbohydrates and their synthesis
• Excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills
• Ability to design and execute complex projects
• Capable of working independently
• Success working in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Supervisory experience in a laboratory setting
• Hands-on experience with mass spectrometry
• Experience with proposal writing and review processes
• Ability to trouble-shoot equipment
• Experience using laboratory management system
