General Summary/Purpose:
The overall purpose of this position is to establish and manage practicum programs – including outreach activities such as internships, volunteering, and shadowing opportunities with organizations and agencies working in international health in the U.S. and abroad – and to establish systematic alumni engagement with special attention to career mentoring for our students. We are looking for a dynamic, entrepreneurial, self-driven individual who enjoys working with people and developing partnerships and has a passion for improving health globally. This individual will develop and nurture relationships with a wide variety of audiences, particularly alumni and leaders of outside agencies, educating them on the needs of academically talented students and the specific benefits placing within their organization for an educational experience.

Under the direction of the Academic Program Manager, the Practicum and Alumni Partnership Coordinator will work closely with each of the four major academic program areas in the Department of International Health (DIH): Global Disease Epidemiology and Control, Health Systems, Human Nutrition, and Social and Behavioral Interventions to determine priorities and commence activities around practicum programs and alumni engagement. The Department currently has approximately 80 PhD students and 130 MSPH and MHS students, 137 MAS students, and about a dozen postdoctoral fellows. The Department emphasizes master’s and doctoral training programs for students with international and cross-cultural interests, focusing principally on traditionally disadvantaged and/or under-represented communities worldwide.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop a vision, strategy, and plan that builds on the strategy of integrating practicum design, alumni connections, employer engagement, experiential learning, and mentoring into the academic and co-curricular learning experience for students.
  • Engage with students, faculty, alumni, and employers to develop practicum experiences for students.
  • Work with department faculty to establish contacts with local and international organizations and agencies.
  • Create and maintain a database of organizations that offer practicum opportunities and potential long-term employment; cultivate and maintain contacts with potential employers so they can advertise their available positions – either for student interns or graduates – within the department.
  • Establish partnerships with organizations and agencies to set up programs for master’s students in their second year to undertake professional practicums for applied learning in the field of International Health in settings in the U.S. and abroad. This would entail the development of Memoranda of Understanding and strategic partnership plans.
  • Coordinate and manage, with DIH program leadership and faculty advisors and other JHU programs like the Center for Global Health, the process of matching students to the programs annually. This would involve ensuring that opportunities are developed and advertised across the department, and that students are screened for placement.
  • With DIH program leadership, create and maintain a practicum placement handbook that provides guidance and articulates standard expectations to students and preceptors at sites.
  • Work with organization and agency leadership and IH leadership to monitor and evaluate the placements and assess the satisfaction of all parties.
  • Cultivate and maintain departmental connections with a professional network of International Health alumni and external collaborators; develop and maintain a formal mentorship program for DIH students to engage professionally with them. Mentoring may be, but need not be, linked to the development of practicum opportunities.
  • Plan and implement campus recruitment visits or fairs where feasible.
  • Work closely with program directors, academic coordinators and advising faculty to understand and implement career development and placement strategies. Be familiar with applicable program requirements, specific skillsets, and career development needs for students in each of the department’s master’s level degree programs.
  • Plan and coordinate activities with career services and career counseling offices serving JHU, JHSON, JHSOM, and JHSPH students, and refer students to them as needed.
  • Develop and implement an alumni engagement strategy working closely with communications staff to strengthen departmental outreach.
  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with colleagues across units, including, but not limited to, academic departments, advisors, alumni relations, and international services.
  • Maintain and strategize support of mentorship for student.
  • Engage with the JHSPH Alumni Relations office to enhance alumni-related activities mentioned above.
  • Will be required to learn and use custom student and school information system.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Master’s degree in a related field of study.
  • 3 years experience in global health, international development, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in partnership development and management.
  • Familiarity with the landscape of actors working in the global health arena including NGOs, development agencies and multilateral organizations.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent organizational, analytical, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and be a proactive leader.
  • Excellent technical and computer skills (Internet, and software applications: word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, grants preparation, etc.).
