Accountabilities

The Director is responsible for the effective organization, management, administration, and supervision of all aspects of Colgate University’s Department of Physical Education and Recreation which includes the following:

Physical Education: As the Chair of Physical Education, the Director oversees the curriculum, scheduling, enrollment, and tracking of Colgate’s physical education program which is a graduation requirement for all Colgate students. The physical education curriculum offers a variety of programs and courses reflecting the institutional commitment to every student’s physical, social, mental and environmental well-being. A holistic approach to curriculum development entails collaboration with offices and departments across campus, with the resulting curriculum inclusive of everything from group fitness classes and outdoor excursions, to dance, Intergroup Dialogue, and more.

Recreation: The Director oversees Colgate’s recreation programming and facilities. This includes, but is not limited to Colgate’s 38 club sports, a robust intramural sports program, group fitness, personal training, and wellness programming, as well as the staffing and management of Trudy Fitness Center, Huntington Gymnasium, Lineberry Natatorium, Trap Range, Academy Rugby Field, Whitnall Field, Glendening Boathouse and Bewkes Waterfront Recreation Center.

Outdoor Education: The Director oversees Colgate’s Director of Outdoor Education and the outdoor education program. Although the Colgate Outdoor Education program is led by the Director of Outdoor Education/Instructor in Physical Education, the Director of Physical Education and Recreation/Chair of Physical Education is responsible for oversight of the strategic vision of the Outdoor Education program and ensuring alignment with the division’s vision and mission.

Accountabilities include:
- responsible for providing fair and accurate input to VP/Director of Athletics regarding employment status (hire, promotion, salary increases, termination) of full-time staff members, including Assistant Directors of Recreation (2), Director of Outdoor Education, Cage Attendants (2), and other casual wage positions. Responsible for the job evaluation, development and continued professional growth of direct reports, both full-time and part-time.
- effective hiring, supervision, training and scheduling of part-time and student staff.
- accurate and timely payroll for all staff.
- accurate record keeping and accounting of all relevant aspects of Physical Education and Recreation and Outdoor Education budget.
- optimal membership sales policies and pricing.
- accurate and timely deposits of all money.
- effective oversight of all core operational tasks e.g. membership card production, locker room rentals and laundry service sign-ups, communication with members and broader community.

Responsible for maintaining an operating budget for each recreation facility. Exercises independent discretion on all purchases and budgetary decisions for all recreational facility budgets.

Responsible for setting and meeting income targets for recreation facility membership and personal training sales.

Independent and unchallengeable decision-making regarding all student and adult participation in recreation facilities and activities.

Create and implement risk management policies and procedures for all recreation and physical education facilities. Effectively communicate all changes to staff and students, as needed.

Exercise independent judgment and discretion for all programming areas.

Ensure ongoing participation data is properly recorded and incorporated into annual reports.

Responsible for the effective supervision of assigned staff. Ensures selection and hiring of outstanding employees; appropriately distributes work assignments and maintains responsibility for quality employee work production; facilitates fair, accurate and timely performance assessments and feedback to include identifying areas for professional development and documenting and conducting corrective measures, as needed. Responsible for ensuring fair and accurate decisions regarding employment status (hire, promotion, salary increases, termination); ensures the creation of effective opportunities and programs for employee mentoring, development and sustained performance.

Accountable for maintaining personal compliance with all relevant governing bodies to include:
- NCAA
- specific conference
- athletic department
- university policies

This position has been designated as a Campus Security Authority ( CSA ), in accordance with the federal statutory requirements of the Jeanne Clery Act. CSAs are required to and responsible for reporting allegations of crimes they receive from students and employees to the Campus Safety Department.

Professional Experience/ Qualifications

Candidates must have professional experience working in recreation, athletics, fitness, or a similar setting. The successful candidate will:
- possess the ability to work cooperatively with university departments and internal and external constituents,
- strong leadership, management, and interpersonal skills
- have the ability to initiate and complete projects independently,
- good written and oral communication skills
- demonstrate experience with managing multiple tasks, and
- be skilled in leading and serving a diverse population.

Preferred Qualifications Education

- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required.
- A Master’s degree preferred.
