Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of the Physical Plant is to maintain all the University’s physical assets. This is achieved by repairs as needed and by a proactive plan of inspection and testing of all major equipment.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The primary purpose of the Fire Alarm & Security Technician position is to test and maintain the University’s fire and security systems. This includes replacing and modifying existing systems and review of plans and specification for new and/or buildings to be renovated. This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow, ice and/or debris removal under the direction of a supervisor.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Associate’s degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Completion of high school and at least 2 years performing moderate to advanced level tasks associated with fire, security systems and/or other electronic/electric systems.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience
Ability to obtain the Fire Sprinkler Maintenance Technician license after 12 months employment with UNCW .
Moderate to advanced level knowledge of microprocessor based fire and security systems and electronic clock systems and practices for repair and installation of these systems
Ability to maintain accurate records
Ability to design, install and repair
Ability to plan work operations, follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively with department heads and other trade and contract workers
Ability to use computers, IPads, IPhone, for timekeeping, communication, data entry and work order management
Ability to perform routine fire sprinkler maintenance duties as listed under the North Carolina Fire Sprinkler Maintenance Technician license to include such duties include testing of water flow and tamper switches on wet and dry sprinkler systems and the testing of fire pumps

7:00AM - 4:00PM with on-call rotation; subject to call-back and emergencies
