Position Description

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the School of Medicine at the University of Washington is seeking two candidates for full-time academic psychology positions.  The appointment term is 12 months.The positions will be at the rank of Assistant Professor without Tenure due to funding (WOT) in the faculty scientist pathway. We anticipate the first of these positions to have a start date of April 1, 2021.

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is an integral component of the UW School of Medicine and it shares UW Medicine’s Mission to ‘Improve the Health of the Public.’ We strive to accomplish this by providing the best care we can today, conducting research to develop better treatments for tomorrow, and inspiring and training the next generation of health care professionals for the Pacific Northwest. Department faculty members provide clinical services and teach at health care facilities in the Puget Sound area and at several rural locations in the WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho).  The department also has a robust research portfolio nearly $35 M annually in sponsored projects. Educational programs include a required medical student clerkship for 240 medical students per year at 30 sites across the WWAMI region, a nationally competitive psychiatry residency with more than 70 psychiatry residents in Seattle and in two regional residency tracks in Idaho and Montana, subspecialty fellowships in addiction, child and adolescent, consultation-liaison, and geriatric psychiatry, a nationally renowned scientist-practitioner psychology internship program, and post-doctoral clinical and research fellowships.

Qualifications

Candidates for the positions must hold a PhD or foreign equivalent in Psychology (or related field). 

The successful candidates will be based at the Center for the Study of Health and Risk Behaviors on the University of Washington Campus, Seattle, Washington. Candidates must have an established and funded research portfolio in one or more of the following areas related to substance use: (1) etiology, prevention and treatment of substance and behavioral addictions, co-occurring risk behaviors (e.g., sexual risk taking, aggression, alcohol, marijuana, substance use, gambling, risky driving) and comorbid medical and mental disorders (e.g., diabetes, depression, PTSD) among adolescents, young adults and adults; (2) substance use policy and/or health/health care policy research relevant to addictive behaviors; (3) assessment or intervention using mobile, wireless and/or wearable technology;  (4) adaptive intervention designs; (5) cognitive, neurocognitive, or biological mechanisms underlying substance use; (6) harm reduction focused Community Based Participatory Research, particularly with traditionally underserved populations; (7) mindfulness-based relapse prevention; and/or (8) advanced methodological design and/or statistical methods in psychiatric and social epidemiology. 

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S,) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
