PROGRAM SUMMARY
The Otter Cross Cultural Center (OC3) is an integral part of the Otter Student Union (OSU), which provides facilities, programs, services, activities, leadership, and employment opportunities that promote campus community. Funding support for OSU operations is generated from student fees. The Otter Student Union (OSU) is a 501©(3) nonprofit corporation and operates as a legally separate entity. Although a legally separate entity, the OSU is a fully integrated part of the California State University, Monterey Bay campus. Presently, University Corporation provides personnel and fiscal services to OSU and OSU employees are University Corporation employees, receiving the same benefits as current University Corporation employees.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Otter Cross Cultural Center (OC3) cultivates active agents of change through the use of storytelling, intersectionality, and inter-generational pipelines of knowledge. Grounded in this triad, the OC3 fosters opportunities for continued knowledge, civic engagement, and social justice activism. The OC3 actively builds strong relationships within and beyond campus communities to inspire individuals to reclaim their stories, identities, and community wealth by offering social justice trainings, programs, events, and services that are open to all.

Under the general direction of the Director for the OSU, and the overall general direction of the OSU Board of Directors, the Assistant Director for the OC3 is responsible for providing strategic leadership, directing the Center's daily operations, coordinating signature programs, fiscal management, serving on CSUMB committees, and building meaningful relationships with on- and off-campus community members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Direct a program that encompasses diversity, equity and inclusion awareness, educational resources, and activities; provide leadership, outreach, vision and oversight for the staff and students of the Otter Cross Cultural Center including program planning, goal setting, program assessment, and budget administration. Supervise and provide leadership to two professional staff members; provide guidance and support, as well as development opportunities; give ongoing feedback; and produce annual evaluations. (35%)
  2. Develop and provide direction to staff for the development of innovative curriculum. Implement campus and community educational trainings that articulate the interplays of intersectional identities, storytelling, hxstories, power, and anti-oppressive/decolonial frameworks. Create and lead the creation of accessible materials and workshops for First-Year Experience, Residential Life, Transfer Student Success, International Programs, Equal Opportunity and Support Programs, and for the Diversity Learning Series. Provide guidance for signature programs, including All Black Gala, International Wxmen's Day, Ignite Social Justice Retreat, and Safe Zone, as well as for affinity/cultural/identity graduation celebrations. (20%)
  3. Utilize political acumen, social/cultural perceptiveness, and conflict management and intervention strategies to work with individuals at all levels within CSUMB and in surrounding communities. Cultivate and maintain collaborative and positive relationships with Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, the Office of Inclusive Excellence, and other campus stakeholders. Represents OC3/OSU on various campus committees, including on the President's Committee on Equity; apply CSU, CSUMB, and OSU operating policies and procedures in assisting to develop, organize, prioritize, and monitor administrative operations for the program. Develops and implements policies and procedures and ensures they are interpreted and applied properly. (20%)
  4. Responsible for budget preparation, policy development, program evaluation, and public relations for the Otter Cross Cultural Center, including fiscal analysis and reporting and proposal development. Develops and implements fundraising initiatives including external grants and other donations, and identifies and seeks internal university funding for student programs and activities. (15%)
  5. Create a safe and affirming student gathering area (within the limits of physical space) by working jointly with the OC3 professional and student staff team, to coordinate the daily operations of the center, including developing staffing schedules, coordinating the weekly newsletter, and maintaining an educational resources library. (10%)

Other Functions:
  1. Actively participates in department meetings, training programs, collaborations, retreats and planning sessions; represents the department on various committees.
  2. Attends seminars and conferences to maintain program and professional development.
  3. Promotes and maintains an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service.
  4. Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge: Critical knowledge of diversity, inclusion, campus climate and multicultural issues in relation to institutions of higher education; supervision, to include mentoring and coaching; supporting, advising or counseling college students; assessment and development of learning outcomes.

Skills: Highly developed interpersonal and public communication skills including political acumen, social/cultural perceptiveness, and conflict management and intervention strategies; proven ability to work with individuals at all levels within the organization; demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience; high degree of problem-solving, organizational and time management skills; demonstrated budget management, program assessment, and reporting skills; facilitation and teaching experience in areas of social justice education; direct experience, understanding and engagement with issues impacting diverse populations and those who experience oppression, specifically in areas of race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, national origin, spirituality and class; demonstrated commitment to holistic student well-being, appreciation for students, and dedication to their success.

Ability to: to manage multiple priorities and work cooperatively with others in a fast-paced, changing environment; accomplish tasks autonomously and efficiently; set expectations and achieve results while contributing to the larger unit goals and mission; focus on priorities, strategies, and vision.


Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Master’s degree from an accredited college/university and 5 years of experience. Professional experience must include evidence of specialized competencies related to the duties and responsibilities listed above as well as evidence indicating the potential for further growth and specific application of these knowledge areas.


Specialized Skills:
Demonstrated experience that clearly provides evidence of the knowledge and skills required to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements identified above are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required.

Due to the nature of the work, this position requires the ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the Corporation’s liability coverage. Thorough knowledge of office systems and ability to use a broad range of technology, systems, and packages. The person holding this position is considered a “mandated reporter” under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.


Preferred Qualifications:
PhD, experience teaching at the University level and/or experience building social justice curriculum; strong conflict resolution skills; and evidence of mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.

Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB’s Vision.

Compensation and Benefits:
The University Corporation is committed to providing our employees with a comprehensive program that rewards efforts that are appreciated by your colleagues, students, and the customers we serve. The monthly hiring salary/range is $5,400-$5,800. This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA (403b), 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits.
