Job Description
The Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Science and Mathematics at the University of the Virgin Islands is seeking candidates for at least one full time, tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor for Fall 2021. Commitment to quality undergraduate teaching, continuing scholarship, and university and community service is required.
The University of the Virgin Islands is a Historically Black publicly supported land-grant institution. UVI is seeking faculty who will ensure high academic standards in a nurturing and learner-centered environment in keeping with our HBCU status through scholarly research and teaching excellence. Appointees must be able to work productively with colleagues and students of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds; serve on the University's committees; and contribute to the implementation of the University's Strategic Plan, Greatness Through Innovation.
The College of Science and Mathematics (https://www.uvi.edu/academics/science-math/default.aspx) offers undergraduate programs in Biology, Marine Biology, Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Process Technology as well as Masters programs in Marine and Environmental Science, and Mathematics for Secondary Teachers. In addition, the College includes research centers that bridge the STEM fields: the Center for Marine and Environmental Sciences, the Caribbean Green Technology Center, the Virgin Islands Center for STEM Education Research and Practice, and the Etelman Observatory. UVI is the lead institution for NSF EPSCoR funding for our territorial program Mare Nostrum Caribbean: Stewardship Through Strategic Research and Workforce Development (https://viepscor.com/) with a focus on integrating physical, biological and human factors to explain the process of ecosystem dynamics, disease, and demographics on coral reefs. The College also has student training programs supported by NSF, NIH, and DOE.
Required Qualifications
A Ph.D. from an accredited institution in the Biological Sciences is required. Exceptional ABD candidates may also be considered, but a Ph.D. must be earned by time of appointment. Must possess a record of or potential for achievement in teaching, academic research and service.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have: demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level; adaptability and genuine interest in teaching; and a strong commitment to teaching excellence, undergraduate research, and scholarship. All areas of biology will be considered, but preference will be given to individuals with expertise in one or more of the following- anatomy & physiology, biostatistics, botany, evolution, ecology, microbiology and molecular biology. Ideal applicants will also be able to work collaboratively with other UVI faculty, especially those across the STEM fields and in our research centers.

Successful applicants will be expected to teach a diversity of courses as well as carry out an independent research program, including undergraduates, that leads to peer-reviewed publications and external funding. Student mentoring in both research and academic activities during the semester as well as during summer research projects is expected. Other responsibilities include advising, and University service.
