The Director has broad responsibilities to advance student success by working collaboratively with Colleges, Academic and Student Affairs Departments, Graduate College, the Office of Institutional Research, and other appropriate offices. The Director must exhibit superior management and communication skills to build partnerships with staff and the university's leadership team.
UNK invites applications for the position of Director, Academic
Success. Reporting to the Dean, Division of Student Affairs (Chief
Student Affairs Officer), the Director provides campus leadership
in all aspects of student academic success, with principal
responsibility for overseeing and managing the following units:
Disability Services for Student, Student Support Services (TRIO
Federal Grant), Kearney Bound Scholars program, and the First
Generation initiative. Director is responsible for designing,
implementing, evaluating as well as improving through innovative
strategic planning the integrated and comprehensive student access
and success models of these programs. Director has broad
responsibilities to advance student accessibility and success by
working collaboratively with Colleges, Academic and Student Affairs
Departments, Graduate College, the Office of Institutional
Research, Office of Sponsored Programs, and other appropriate
offices. Director must exhibit superior management and
communication skills to build partnerships with staff and the
university's leadership teams. Director will serve as a member of
the Student Affairs Leadership Team as well as the Concerning and
Risky Events (CARE) team.
The Director will have overarching responsibilities that include,
but are not limited to the following:
• Administer, develop, structure, and periodically evaluate TRIO
SSS program which focuses on retention and graduation for students
who are low income, first generation, and/or have disabilities that
interfere significantly with higher education. Maintain grant
program, adjust to changing student needs and monitor services
provided by Student Support Services, Federal TRIO Grant including
reporting, monitoring, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and
institutional regulations, policies, and procedures related to
administering the grant for the institution. In close collaboration
with the Assistant Director of TRIO oversee the day to day
activities of the program.
• In close collaboration with the KBS Coordinator ensure local high
schools annually select 9th grader participants for scholarship,
support the successful transition of these KBS students to UNK,
seeking full participation of KBS students into the Living Learning
community as well as the LNSK 103 Foundations course taught by the
KBS Coordinator. Support the coordination of program services with
Admissions and Financial Aid as well as Housing. Overseeing the
addition of supplemental instruction on transition to
college.
• In close collaboration with the 1st Gen Coordinator inform
program development based on empirical evidence of best practices
in the field. Provides vision and oversight for developing and
implementing a comprehensive program of activities to promote the
academic success and integration of 1st Gen student communities
into the UNK family. The position is focused on supporting 1st
generation college students who benefit from a strong, integrated
program of academic and support services. Supervision of the
coordinator’s responsibilities to monitor & coach first gen
students; work with various students, faculty, and parents to
educate and support awareness of 1st gen issues; assist in the
implementation of student success/retention strategies; and
collaborate on data strategies.
• In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Disability
Services for Students (DSS) administer, develop, structure, and
periodically evaluate services for students with disabilities and
oversee the provision of executive services for these students that
includes documentation verification, Accommodation Plan
development, coaching for accessing services and acting as liaison
for communication with administration. Responsible for compliance
with ADA, 504, and other disability legislation.
• Responsible for personnel administration of the Academic Success
Offices including selection, supervision, evaluation, training, and
recommendation for salary increase
• Establish a positive rapport and maintain strong working
relationships with faculty and staff for referrals, development of
discipline-specific resources, and ensure that offerings are
complementary rather than duplicative across departments. Oversee
assessment of services and program performance as well as develop
and implement a unit assessment plan, including the collection of
student usage statistics, satisfaction surveys, assessments of
progress toward learning goals, and potentially tracking student
outcomes over time, reviewing the process annually, and making
recommendations for changes or decision based on assessment
outcomes
• Monitor and manage budgets for all areas, learning and utilizing
the specific requirements that govern each. Project expenditures to
all for informed decision making for obligation program funds.
Administer services including accountability, evaluation,
correction and improvement, documentation and reporting services to
address students' needs. Oversee and encourage the use of
technology in providing services as well as in program
assessment.
• Must work effectively with Academic Affairs, Enrollment
Management, Students Affairs, Business and Finance and others
Divisions and departments to accomplish duties of the
position.
• Participate in professional development both on and off campus.
Represent the Division and UNK in professional arenas.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
The successful candidate for this position will demonstrate
evidence of the following:
• Successful leadership experiences in student success programs and
disability services.
• Effective supervision of academic and nonacademic staff,
students, interns and other categories of personnel.
• Knowledge of current research and interventions promoting student
success, 1st generation, scholarship, and disability services, as
well as demonstrated understanding, development, and assessment of
learning outcomes.
• Effective communication with faculty, administrators, staff,
students, and the general public.
• University-level academic teaching and/or scholarship.
• Knowledge or experience in budget administration, program
evaluation, personnel training and supervision, and services for
individuals with disabilities required.
• Working knowledge of technology for grant management and service
delivery, previous experience in grant writing, implementation, or
administration preferred.
• Demonstrated experience of having met the challenges of first
generation, low income, or disability barriers.
• Active engagement with the campus community

A master’s degree in education, counseling, human services, higher education administration or related fields is required. A minimum of three years of administrative experience with progressive responsibilities overseeing, managing, designing, and implementing student success programs and disability services at a mid-level or above administrative position related to higher education. Experience in retention programming, academic performance management, and working with students at high academic risk required. Trio SSS and/or similar student success programs as well as a university disability services program.
Preferred Qualifications: Earned doctorate from an accredited institution is preferred. * More than 3 years of administrative experience with progressive responsibilities overseeing, managing, designing, and implementing student success programs and disability services at a mid-level or above administrative position related to higher education. Research in retention and grant writing experience preferred. Demonstrated experience with assessment and strategic planning preferred.
