The City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) is made up of seven colleges, the largest community college system in Illinois and one of the largest nationally. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:
Serves as senior legal counsel in the Office of the General Counsel. Represents and advises Officers and administrators of the City Colleges of Chicago.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBITIES:
Defends the District in state and federal courts and administrative proceedings.
Represents the District on labor and employment matters including collective bargaining negotiations, arbitrations, personal injury, and worker's compensation.
Serves as legal advocate or advisor for City Colleges of Chicago staff in legal proceedings, including state and federal courts, administrative proceedings and depositions.
Coordinates legal strategy of major cases and labor negotiations with the General Counsel and outside counsel.
Advises upper level management in matters relating to collective bargaining agreement interpretation, contracts, school law, personal injury, worker's compensation and real estate.
Conducts legal research into the intent of local, state and federal laws and administrative regulations and procedures and applies the law to the circumstances.
Works on unusual or complex legal problems and provides solutions that may be highly creative.
Drafts legal documents such as motions, contracts, settlement agreements, legal opinions and briefs.
Assists with revisions to Board Reports, Board Rules, and the Board Operations Manual.
Performs other management and legal related duties as assigned.
Adheres to CCC Customer Service Excellence standards.
Qualifications :
- Must possess a J.D. degree, admission to the Illinois Bar and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
- Six to eight years of previous litigation experience required including fact investigation, drafting pleadings, preparing written discovery, motion practice and negotiations. Experience in settlement analysis, liability and damages analysis, depositions, arbitrations, trials, expert retention and preparation, and appeals is also required.
- Strong research, legal writing and human relations skills required.
- Previous experience in administrative and appellate matters desirable.
- Must have the ability to effectively manage a diverse caseload with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to function in a high-level position requiring utmost confidentiality, discretion, tact, and judgment.
- Proven ability to use computers to perform work activities.
- Must be self-directed and innovative, able to assess current operations in an effort to improve the goals of the District. Must be able to meet deadlines in a timely manner.
Chicago residency is required for all full-time employees within 6 months of hire.
