The School of Health and Applied Human Sciences ( SHAHS ), within the College of Health and Human Services ( CHHS ) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington ( UNCW ), seeks an outstanding faculty member for a Lecturer (non tenure-track) or Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Associate Professor (tenure track), nine-month position in the School’s Exercise Science program beginning August 2021.

Appointment at the Lecturer, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor rank is dependent upon academic credentials and qualifications relative to University and School standards. The successful candidate will become one of nine Exercise Science faculty members that serve approximately 400 undergraduate Exercise Science majors. The successful candidate will have a wide-ranging background and be able to teach a variety of undergraduate Exercise Science courses. Moreover, depending on rank, the successful candidate will conduct research, publish, write grants, advise students, and provide community engagement and service to the program, school, college, university, and profession.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Applicants must possess the following qualifications for the Lecturer position:

• Masters degree in Exercise Science, or a closely related field with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework closely related to Exercise Science.
• Evidence of successful college teaching experience in an Exercise Science or closely related curriculum both face-to-face and online.
• Ability to teach Human Anatomy & Physiology courses.

Applicants must possess the following qualifications for Assistant or Associate Professor position:

• Doctoral degree in Exercise Science, or a closely related field with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework closely related to Exercise Science. Applicants who are ABD for the terminal degree may be considered depending on expected completion date.
• Evidence of successful college teaching experience in an Exercise Science or closely related curriculum both face-to-face and online.
• Ability to teach Human Anatomy & Physiology courses.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following qualifications for the Lecturer Position:

• Experience working and teaching in a human cadaver lab and / or with Anatomage tables.
• Experience teaching Human Anatomy & Physiology courses.
• Experience teaching a variety of Exercise Science courses.
• Hold professional certifications associated with Exercise Science or closely related field.
• Demonstrated success in working with diverse populations or students of color.
• Interest in developing and implementing curricula related to culturally diverse populations.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with constituents across the School, College and University.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following qualifications for the Assistant or Associate Professor position:

• Experience working and teaching in a human cadaver lab and / or Anatomage tables.
• Experience teaching Human Anatomy & Physiology courses.
• Experience teaching a variety of Exercise Science courses.
• Hold professional certifications associated with Exercise Science or closely related field.
• Demonstrated success in working with diverse populations or students of color.
• Interest in developing and implementing curricula related to culturally diverse populations.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with constituents across the School, College and University.
• Successful research program and grant activity with a clear research trajectory.
• Demonstrated potential to develop a successful research program and grant activity in Exercise Science.
• Evidence of a commitment to promoting undergraduate student scholarly activity.

Required Certifications or Licensure Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The UNCW Exercise Science Program has a long-standing and successful history of preparing students for matriculation to graduate school or careers within the field of exercise science. Exercise Science students are required to complete the exercise science core courses and one of two self-selected concentration: Allied Health concentration or Exercise Physiology Certification concentration.

The School of Health and Applied Human Sciences ( SHAHS ) has five undergraduate degree programs:
• Public Health
• Exercise Science
• Healthful Living and Fitness Education
• Recreation, Sport Leadership, and Tourism Management
• Recreation Therapy

The SHAHS also has Master of Science degrees in:
• Athletic Training
• Healthcare Administration
• Gerontology with 4+1 options:
o (Bachelors / Masters) with Public Health / Gerontology
o Recreation Therapy / Gerontology
o Exercise Science / Gerontology

The SHAHS also supports a Master of Arts in Teaching ( MAT ) and a Master of Education concentration in Physical Education and Health through the Watson College of Education. Minors are offered in:
• Gerontology
• Health
• Recreation, Sport Leadership, and Tourism Management
• Yoga Studies
• Assistance Dog Training

The College of Health and Human Services was created in July 2010 to provide UNCW with a new mechanism to link and focus its health-related research, professional continuing education, and health knowledge dissemination and application.
