The School of Art + Art History at the University of Florida invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor in Museum Studies. This is a full-time, nine-month, tenure track faculty position with an expected start date of August 2021. The faculty member will pursue an active program of research; teach a 2-2 load of courses at the undergraduate and graduate level; advise graduate students; chair thesis committees; and contribute service to the university, the community, and the profession.

The Graduate Program in Museum Studies at the University of Florida prepares the museum leaders of tomorrow to be ethical, socially and politically engaged members of their communities, prepared to make positive impacts, both locally and globally, through critical museum work. Our selective program was established nearly twenty years ago and like museums themselves, we are engaged, responsive, and evolving.

We seek a collaborator, a committed teacher and mentor, an engaged community member, and a committed researcher in Museum Studies or a related field. In concert with other Museum Studies faculty, this person will contribute to growing the program, by creating new courses and learning opportunities and vision for technology and museum integration. We have a strong interest in community engagement and growing our presence in local communities We are seeking a faculty member also interested in developing relationships with UF faculty and community organizations to develop research and create learning opportunities for students outside the classroom.

Responsibilities: Teaching graduate courses in Museum Studies (history and philosophy of museums, curatorial practice, exhibition design, collections management, etc.); advising graduate students; chairing thesis committees; engaging faculty from diverse disciplines; conducting a program of scholarly research appropriate to Museum Studies; participating in service to school, college, university, community, and profession. Candidates must be able to work with students pursuing careers in a range of disciplines and institutions (e.g. museums of art, history, natural history, science, technology, etc.)

SCHOOL OF ART + ART HISTORY: The mission of the School of Art and Art History (SA+AH) is to nurture a culture of critical inquiry in scholarly and creative pursuits. The faculty within the SA+AH seeks to empower each individual student with knowledge, skills, and insight to respond thoughtfully to our changing world.  The SA+AH is driven by the knowledge that visual and scholarly research is vital to the work of the larger university and that this research enhances the lives of its regional, national, and international communities. The school has more than 370 undergraduate and 120 graduate students studying art history, art education, museum studies, visual and design communication, and studio art (art + technology, ceramics, creative photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture). Degrees awarded include the BA, BFA, MA, MFA, and PhD. Through the Harn Eminent Scholar Chair in Art History (HESCAH) endowment and the Visiting Artist lecture series, the SA+AH sponsors a robust program of public talks, symposia, and class visits by leading scholars and artists. Also a part of the School of Art + Art History is the University Galleries—University Gallery, Gary R. Libby Gallery, Grinter Gallery. Together with student-run 4Most Gallery, they offer a diverse program of critically engaged exhibitions of professional and student artwork. The Workshop for Art Research and Practice (WARP)—the school’s studio art foundations program— is housed in a dedicated 6000 sq. ft. WARPhaus near a fabrication lab and design studio at Infinity Hall, a living community for entrepreneurial-minded students. The University of Florida is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission on Colleges and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Minimum Requirements:

  • Applicants must hold a terminal degree or equivalent professional experience (PhD or be ABD in Museum Studies, Anthropology, Art History, or other relevant field). Candidates with a master’s degree in Museum Studies with significant museum experience are also welcome to apply.

  • Minimum of 3 years Museum experience.

  • Applicants must have the expertise to teach graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in Museum Studies.

  • Evidence of success in promoting an environment that advances access, equity, and inclusion is required.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Scholarly publications related to Museum Studies.

  • Administrative skills.

  • A record of community engagement and collaborative projects.

  • Three or more years of teaching experience at the university level.
