Metropolitan State University, Minnesota’s public, urban university, is seeking to hire a [faculty member in Computer Science].  This is a [full-time, tenure-track position within the [Department of Computer Science and Cybersecurity] and is expected to start August 16, 2021.

Metropolitan State University has responded to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic by offering nearly all of its courses in a fully online format for the 2020-2021 academic year, limiting any in-person instruction to courses for which in-person learning is essential for students to achieve the learning outcomes. In addition, the majority of employees are working remotely, taking advantage of technological tools to engage students and complete their work.  The search for this position will be conducted using web conferencing technology.

The School/Academic Department: Our programs in computer science, information technology, computer forensics, and cybersecurity provide students with the hands-on experience and current programming skills to advance their careers in most aspects of computer science and related fields.  We are ranked #9 in the nation for 2020 for first-year post-graduation salary for Information Technology baccalaureates by GradReports.  Our department collaborates with the departments of Mathematics/Statistics and Management Information Systems to offer an interdisciplinary major in Data Science.  In a typical academic year, a full-time faculty member will teach five courses (undergraduate and/or graduate), split between two semesters. In addition, the faculty member will engage in scholarship, advising, and service. Our department enjoys grants from federal and state agencies, and from the private sector for performing innovative research.  GradReports [3] ranked the Computer Science and Cybersecurity Department #9 in the nation in 2020 for first-year post-graduation salary for Information Technology baccalaureates. Additionally, Diverse Issues in Higher Education [4] ranked Metropolitan State #20 in number of African American graduates from undergraduate programs in Computer and Information Sciences and Support Services in 2019. Responsibilities:

Faculty members are expected to:

  • Demonstrate ability to teach Computer Science courses effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Engage in scholarly research or creative achievement
  • Provide evidence of continuing preparation and study
  • Contribute to student growth and development through advising and assistance and engage in service to the university and community
  • Demonstrate a commitment to serving a culturally diverse student body through delivering a student-centered education in a liberal arts and sciences context and possess the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Type of Degree and acceptable disciplinary area(s) for degree.
    • Ph. D. in Computer Science or a closely related field. Candidates who will complete their Ph. D. before August 2021 may be considered.
  • At least one year of teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
  • Ability to teach courses in at least one of the following areas:
    • Data structures and algorithms
    • Operating systems
    • Software design
  • Demonstrated commitment to culturally relevant, equitable, inclusive, and anti-racist pedagogies.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Expertise in at least one of the following areas of knowledge is preferred.
    • Human Computer Interface
    • Parallel and Distributed Systems
    • Web Design, Web Applications, Mobile Applications, and/or Cloud Services
    • Internet of Things
  • Effective and culturally competent communication skills (written & verbal).
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an institution with a culturally, economically and linguistically diverse student body and workforce.
  • Outstanding/Excellent communication skills (written & verbal) to communicate with a variety of persons and groups. (if included in required quals, the “excellent” or “outstanding” provides you another level of screening applicants)

Salary: Salary is commensurate with education and experience, and is determined by the salary placement process as outlined in the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) Master Agreement.

 

*Employment for this position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement for the Inter Faculty Organization.
